Red hot and spicy, peppers make our food deliciously hot. Chilli peppers have different shapes, colours and sizes and are found in all parts of the world. These hot chillies vary from their spicy taste and are measured by a method called Scoville Scale. Based on the Scoville Scale, here is a list of the 10 hottest chillies on Earth:

1. Trinidad Scorpion Butch T Pepper

The world’s hottest chilli pepper according to Guinness World, Trinidad Scorpion Butch T pepper has a rating of 1,463,700 Scoville heat units. It was declared on April 12, 2011 as the hottest chilli pepper dislodging Naga Viper pepper. It is referred as scorpion pepper because the pointed end of the pepper looks like a scorpion stinger.

2. Naga Viper Pepper

Previously the world’s hottest chilli pepper was created in England by Gerald Fowler, a chilli farmer based in Cark, Cumbria. The pepper is a hybrid produced from Bhut Jokolia, Naga Morich and Trinidad Scorpion. It has a rating of 1,382,118 Scoville Heat Units.

3. Infinity Pepper

Infinity is a chilli pepper which has a 1,176,182 Scoville scale rating created in England by chilli breeder Nick Woods of Fire Foods, Grantham, Lincolnshire. It is the third hottest chilli pepper in the world.

4. Bhut Jolokia Pepper

Sometimes known as Naga Jolokia in its native Assam region in India, Bhut Jolokia was formerly recognized as the hottest chilli pepper in the world. The pepper is usually called the “ghost chilli” or “ghost pepper”. It has a Scoville scale rating of 1,041,427 heat units.

5. Dorset Naga Pepper

Dorset Naga pepper was originally grown in Dorset, England. It has 923,000 Scoville Heat Units. It is a subspecies of the original Naga. It is characterized by a wrinkled skin and is a small red pepper that has similar size of the Naga Jolokia.

6. Red Savina Pepper

Also known as the Dominican Devil\’s Tongue Pepper, the Red Savina has a rating of about 350,000 to 580,000 Scoville Heat Units. It is a relative of the Habanero, but is quite hotter. The Red Savina was the hottest chilli pepper from 1994 up to 2006.

7. Scotch Bonnet

Found mainly in the Caribbean islands and also in Guyana and the Maldives Islands and West Africa, Scotch Bonnet is also known as Scotty Bonnet, Boabs Bonnet, or Bonney Peppers. These peppers are used for flavouring in many different dishes and cuisines around the world. It has a rating of about 100,000 to 325,000 Scoville heat units.

8. Habanero Chilli

The name Habanero originated from the city of Havana in Cuba. It has a smooth surface skin and when unripe, it has a green colour that changes to orange or red as it matures. It has a rating of about 100,000 to 350,000 on the Scoville scale.

9. Rocoto Pepper

Rocoto Pepper or Capsicum pubescens is found mainly in Central and South America. It is able to withstand cooler temperatures compared with other pepper plants. It has a rating of 50,000 to 100,000 Scoville heat unites.

10. Pequin/Piquin Pepper

Pequin, also known as \”bird pepper”, is commonly used as a spice. Like other chillies, Pequin starts out green and become reds when they mature. It has a Scoville scale of 75,000 to 100,000 units.
