A Couple Ways to Apply and Use Stucco
Stucco is a material consisting of lime, sand, and water although other additives such as cement, acrylics, and glass fibers may be added for properties they provide such as strength and flexibility. . Pigments can be provided for color. Stucco is applied in three coats to provide the desired finish. The three coats are known as a scratch coat, a brown coat, and then a finish coat. The stucco must be applied following certain steps or it may result in a cracked or chipped coat. Stucco provides a textured finish to both interior and exterior walls and there are a wide variety of ways that stucco can be used to finish a particular look.
How to Apply It to Interior Walls
The application of the product can hide wall blemishes especially in older buildings which have settled. The first step is to prepare your walls by patching any cracks or crumbled areas and then applying a primer on the entire wall. If your product is not already tinted you can add one cup of wall paint per gallon of it for color as this will enhance the color when you paint the walls later. Use a heavy roller to apply it to the wall in an area roughly arm length. After it is applied press a trowel flat against it, then pull it out. This will produce the rippled and peaked effect in the mixture. Repeat this process until the whole wall is covered. After it has cured, or dried, for a few days then you can paint it the desired color.
How to Apply It to Exterior Walls
When applying it to an exterior wall you may need to encapsulate the wall by applying new plywood. On top of this use a wire mesh, such as chicken wire, and staple it to the wood for a rough surface that the product will stick to. Apply the first coat, scratch coat, as smoothly as possible and allow it to dry for one to two days. Apply the second coat, brown coat, smoothly as well and use a wet sponge after a few hours to smooth it further. Then apply the finish coat in small amounts and immediately use your selected texturizing technique keeping a wet edge to work with.
Different Textures
The variety of textures can be achieved through the use of different tools. A trowel creates the rippled peaked effect by laying it flat and pulling it out. A broom can create swirls, arcs, and circles. Artificial turf can be used to create a pebbled look. There are also a range of textured rollers to apply a variety of brick and stone looks. A combination of colors and mixing up the texture allows you to create your own distinct and unique look.
Stucco is a versatile product which can be used on interior or exterior walls. It provides quick covering for minor wall blemishes. It also allows various textures to be applied for a distinct look to any room or area you use it.
