A Review of Rocky Patel Old World Reserve Cigars

Cigar: Old World Reserve Corojo/Robusto Origin: Honduras

Wrapper: Corojo or Maduro Strength: Full

Binder: Nicaraguan

Rocky Patel Old World Reserve Cigars was the company’s first endeavor in creating a line of premium cigars. They were first introduced in 2005 at the RTDA show in Louisiana, but they weren’t released until 2006 as a reintroduction in Las Vegas. Rocky Patel Old World Reserve has the richness, elegance and smoothness of the RP Vintage Series and its revered complexities of flavors with the earthy strength and power of the Edge. Some even describe them as the Vintage series on steroids!

The Robb Report hailed the Rocky Patel Old World Reserve Robusto as the “Best of the Best” for 2007. RP’s “Master Blend 7XX” as it is labeled on the box, is just that…masterfully blended with top notch tobaccos that are extensively fermented and aged with the highest of quality control standards. When you open a chest of these babies, you will see one elegantly fine cigar just begging to be smoked.

Visually this cigar is quite a treat. This is a nicely boxed pressed stogie with a milk chocolate wrapper fraught with veins and only one visible seam. It is nicely constructed with no tears. The band screams class with a gold leaf logo and flowers of tobacco. The bottom half of the cigar is adorned with an RP logo that looks like a regular paper wrapper, but in fact is actually compressed bits of left over tobacco. It is not recommended to smoke it though, as some have said it gives off a burnt tobacco flavor. This is a firm stick with a firm pre-light draw. The nose of the foot boasts of chocolate.

The burn and draw are excellent on the first third with a firm, light gray ash. This introduction has been described as a creamy roasted nut and coffee flavor with elements of cedar and white pepper. Some report an herbal, almost floral taste. The ash stays nice and tight.

The chocolate and nut flavors start to fade in the second third and are replaced by earthy oak and black pepper. As with the Edge, the strength builds at this point producing nice amounts of smoke that plays through the air.

The last third is where spice takes a front and center stage overshadowing the woody flavors and the draw increases. “Ramped up” spice seems to be the predominate characteristic at this point, almost to the point of being unpleasant. Other descriptions mention a bitter taste but nothing to really fuss over.

Overall, Rocky Patel Old World Reserve has gotten positive reviews and is definitely something to add to your repertoire. You can never go wrong with Rocky Patel.
