Asterisk Phone Systems As a Better Way to Communicate

Being able to communicate effectively in any business environment is essential for the good of the operation. Asterisk phone systems represent an option that can be used for effective communication. It can make all the difference to the efficient running of an office.

This software implementation of a private branch exchange for telephones was developed by a man called Mark Spencer, in 1999. This type of exchange is also referred to by its short name of PBX. The name of the software originates from the symbol found on keyboards, the *, or asterisk.

There are two licenses associated with the release of this particular application. Each is concerned with different aspects. The one covers free software and the other one is for distribution of certain components by licensees.

It was originally designed for one type of operating system, but then developed further and was adjusted so that it could work with a wider range of these systems. This has made it more versatile and widened its appeal among users. Added to this, is the fact that it is able to achieve similar functions that a typical PBX has, such as interactive voice response, voice mail and conference calls etc.

In addition to these, users can add in extra functions if they use compatible program languages. It is also possible if the languages will communicate by means of the standard streams system or using network TCP sockets. For this, specific interface programs must be initiated first.

Essentially what happens is that this software converts a normal computer into a communications server. The features can work for small or large businesses, call centers and even at government department level. Because of the extent to which it is being used, it now represents 18% of the global market for telephonic systems.

The application will need an interface of some sort installed. The specific type will depend on how many lines are to be in use. Smaller numbers can use analog or ISDN BRI connections, but those above 12 lines, require digital ones.

The type of computer required to run the software with is reasonably wide ranging. This should, ideally, will act as a server for the system planned. As long as the computer is a modern one the basic hardware requirements are likely to be met.

Once the hardware has been selected for use, then the relevant software programs need to be installed. There are different ways to get the installation done. The best approach keeping the Asterisk phone system up to date is by carefully choosing the method of installing it so that the source code does not have to be compiled by hand.

When the system is running correctly it must be configured for voice over internet protocol and public telephone switched network services. Unless the software gets connected up to these, it is essentially of no use. It thus has information on how to connect to the service as well as the endpoint, such as actual telephone hand sets or terminal adapters. Some Asterisk phone systems applications require both but others need only the service connection.
