Cat

Not only humans suffer from dandruff. Cats also have the same problem. And for them, there are several different causes. Fortunately, dandruff as a symptom and its underlying cause can be controlled or treated.

Cat dandruff is manifested as dry and scaly skin. Your cats would frequently scratch the area as it is itchy. Sometimes, the area can turn red and look inflamed. Some cats who suffer from diabetes will have more frequent urination and will be thirsty most of the time. Diabetes can be a cause of dandruff.

Another cause of cat dandruff can be the excessive production of oils in the skin. This is called seborrhea. Such condition does not only make the skin look and feel oily but it also harbors harmful organisms. These organisms are the specific causes of dandruff.

Cats can be bathed regularly or whenever their coat gets too oily. It might not be enough to use ordinary cat shampoo. So, in order to take care of dandruff, you need to use a formulation that is specifically made to solve the problem. Consult a veterinarian about such soap or shampoo or another product. Ensure that it is safe to use on your cat before applying on your cat\’s coat.

Dirty skin can also be a result of the lack of personal grooming by the cat. This can be observed in cats that are too old and are too weak to take care of themselves. To prevent dandruff from appearing, you can also give them a regular bath. In addition to that, you may groom the cat by yourself by combing its hair and removing any dirt from it.

Poor diet may also be a cause. If your cat does not get the nourishment that it needs, its skin won\’t be able to get the proper nutrients that it needs for protection from bacteria or fungi. This can be the cause of dandruff.

For this problem, the provision of proper nutrition is your most important task. Cat food may be enough. But do make sure that you are feeding your cat the right kind of cat food. You can consult a veterinarian to know which ones will be best to feed your cat with. You need to consider not just the amount but also your cat\’s age, size, and physical activity among others.

Omega 3 fatty acids together with enough vitamins and minerals will be needed in your cat\’s diet.

Sunburn may also be a cause of dandruff. The sun burnt area can be applied with a topical steroid cream that is prescribed by your animal doctor.

When your cat\’s dandruff is believed to be caused by a condition such as diabetes, your veterinarian will try to control that condition. The dandruff will disappear if treatments for your cat\’s diabetes are working. Furthermore, maintaining the right temperatures inside the home will keep your cat\’s coat as healthy as possible. During the summer months, you need to make sure that they are comfortable sleeping in their beds and that the room is not too hot for them. During the winter months, humidifiers should be installed.
