Eleven Invaluable Indoor Tanning Tips

With good suntans so are hard to manage with our busy schedules, here are a few indoor tanning tips to help you along in your search to find that perfect skin tone for the summer…

1. Start by finding out more about your skin before you decide on the tanning products, or the amount of time you will spend in an indoor tanning bed. It is generally advisable to tan the skin no more than a couple of tones deep. Deeper tans not only look unnatural but also mean you’ve exposed the skin to harmful rays longer…the same goes for natural suntans.

2. A tanning salon employee can guide you on how long you should be tanning. Start with a seven minute session and buildup to longer sessions gradually. For repeat sessions, the rule of thumb would be to check if your skin is in any way irritated within 24 hours of the tanning. If it is not pink, you can take another tanning session the very next day, or just skip to alternate days while building your base tan.

3. For those on medication, this indoor tanning tips list includes looking up your medication on the photosensitizing medication chart (you can easily spot one at the local tanning salon) that warns against using the listed medications while tanning. Not only do the listed medications react badly with the process, they can lead to bigger health issues that we would rather see you avoid.

4. Tanning towels are a good way to apply your tanning lotion, although they are also the expensive way. Tanning lotions, on the other hand, need to be applied more carefully since they need to be mixed well before application and if you do not apply the lotion evenly over your skin you might end up with a tan that can be technically classified as…uhh…multi-shaded.

5. Whether it is sun tanning, or indoor tanning, remember this tip; it is natural for your skin to look older and more wrinkled after a tanning session so always make sure it is well hydrated with a good moisturizer before and after the tanning session. Even application leads to an even tan, so it is well worth your time to give the moisturizer a good rub in.

6. Getting your skin ready for the process of tanning is important. For an even tan, wash your skin with a mild soap and a good exfoliator to remove any residues or dead skin what will hamper the process.

7. As common sense suggests, it is important to understand that mixing different tanning lotions or products is a very bad idea. While the effects of different brands of indoor tanning lotions may be similar, the chemical compositions almost always differ, even if in the slightest. Mixing different tanning lotions, therefore, can have harmful effects for your skin.

8. For those who choose to use bronzing lotions, unless they wish to wake up with a seriously uneven tan, leaving the tanning lotion on overnight is highly inadvisable. While bronzing lotions are good for doing what the name suggests, they are a little tricky to use since you have to keep them on for about 4 hours after application, and make sure you do not come into contact with moisture, sweat or water during this period so the tan stays on evenly.

9. The tanning process continues for a while after you are done with the procedure. The idea is to resist the temptation to walk straight into a shower. It is best to just keep your skin well hydrated with a good after tan lotion for the next 3-4 hours.

10. Always stop tanning immediately if you feel any skin discomfort. That betrays overexposure, which leads to irritation, skin burns or worse.

11. Always-always keep tanning goggles on when you go through an indoor tanning bed session, and towels are not a viable replacement. The tanning process exposes your skin to UV rays that, while your skin can resist better, your eyes should not be exposed to. For the smart ones, having lighter eyelids is a better bargain than getting their cornea burnt any day of the week.

Eleven tips was the promise, but what is an indoor tanning tips list without a bonus? Always check if your tanning lotion contains a sunscreen or sunblock, not all tanning lotions will contain those so beware and choose wisely.
