Feldenkrais Method – Movement With Benefits

Feldenkrais method is regarded as a somatic type of therapy as it educates the client to achieve self-awareness of movement aside from the benefits they receive from the massage therapy. The client also receives instruction on how to move properly and efficiently to avoid movement problems and restrictions.

This movement based therapy was developed by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais in the 1940s. He himself was suffering from an old knee injury when he started experimenting with movement techniques that can help treat the condition. Dr. Feldenkrais didn’t want to end up in a knee surgery that is why he was determined to correct and treat his condition in the natural way. Eventually, he was successful in discovering and developing the Feldenkrais method which also cured his knee injury.

The therapy consists of massage, educational lessons, hands on lessons, and exercises that can all contribute to a healthy physical and mental condition. All of these are important if you are after the best and most effective results. It would not be wise too to not accomplish all of these if you are serious in treating your condition.

The therapy consists of two important parts considered vital in the progress and success of the treatment of any dysfunction and condition. The two parts of the therapy are known as the Awareness Through Movement® Classes and the Functional Integration® Lessons. Both of these share the equal importance in the whole movement enhancement process.

Awareness Through Movement® Classes is the educational part of the massage therapy where the instructor or therapist shares valuable lessons regarding the series of movement that can aid in the treatment process of certain conditions and dysfunctions. All of the movements taught during this part of the therapy are all essential for the functions of the various parts of the human body. The educational session lasts around 20 to 60 minutes although it may vary depending on the outcome of the lessons and the participation of the client. These series of movements are important and should be remembered by the client as they will be of great use during the therapy session.

Functional Integration® Lessons is the part where the therapist or instructor requires the client to participate on the hands-on lessons. The part begins where the instructor guides the client on how to properly perform the various massage strokes and techniques required for the best results of the feldenkrais method. This part is essential in providing relief to various motion-related conditions such as stroke, stiffness in joints, and other dysfunctions.

The gentle massage therapy is used to address various problems including arthritis, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, back pain, neck pain, frozen shoulders, muscle cramps, stiffness, and many more conditions. With each session, the client can expect and experience weightlessness and a relaxed body and mind. Exercises are also taught to help the patient relieve various body pains by themselves by positioning and moving properly in order to promote proper function of the movable parts of the body as well as release tension on the affected area.
