Food Packaging – it Needs to Be Right for the Food and the Environment
The food industry is extremely reliant on the right packaging not only to keep the food fresh but also to provide protection from contamination. Seafood, poultry and meat for instance, are perishable foods which must be safely packaged. Today, we have a range of materials which are suitable but wax packaging, particularly for poultry boxes and seafood packaging, has become very popular.
Wax is flexible and supple which makes it a very good choice for food wrapping and packaging. It is also strong because when wax is applied to materials such as paper it increases their inherent strength many times and wax can also meet the stringent requirements for food packing standards. Today with the focus on the environment and with the move away from plastic wrapping and packaging, wax packaging is an easy winner. Paper with a wax coating is entirely flexible and can be folded easily, it does not crack and there is no odor. This is important where foods are concerned. Waxed boxes have become a widespread form of packaging for all kinds of foods, particularly for seafood and poultry. These boxes are designed for handling perishable items and are recognized as a safe food grade standard product.
Wax packaging boxes start out as lightweight paper which is then coated with wax to increase its strength and make a firm structure. The wax will also keep out air, moisture, contaminants and odors. The wax coating needs to be food grade and of course, must be odorless and tasteless. Usually, it is a form of paraffin wax which is then sprayed on to the surface of the paper and is sealed with heat. This material is then made into containers of many different shapes and sizes of corrugated boxes, wrappers, folding cartons, cups and tubes.
The raw material in the manufacture of these boxes is paper which of course, comes from wood. This is a renewable resource and as such is reasonably environmentally friendly. Care of the environment is a growing concern so this form of packaging is helping in its preservation and at the same time giving food manufacturers an attractive form of packaging to present their products to the market. It seems that wax packaging in it many forms will be the basis of future developments in the push to find environmentally friendly materials. The development of food packaging will need to find materials which are of high food grade standard, light weight and strong and able to be made into attractive packages for consumers. Additionally these new materials will need to be good for the environment and preferably recyclable.
The purpose of new packaging materials will also be to give a new design to the outside of the product and let the consumer know about the contents of the box or container and other pertinent information. Looking for the best quality in raw materials and the very latest in technology, forward looking companies will continue to find good solutions for food packaging into the future.
