Free English Class For New Immigrant Students
There are a number of factors in gaining English literacy. Not all the proposed free English class for new immigrant will be made alike. Finding one that matches your style, time requirements, and your ability to participate is what should be focused upon. Students should plan to attend all classes. Without attending, directed practice is difficult.
Literacy is initially judged by how many words that can be comprehended. There are 5 stages identified in a school setting. The lower stages are based on knowing around 500 words, by sight or sound. As a lexicon is built, more difficult tasks are undertaken. Common words are tackled first. Then more difficult vocabulary is added when certain mastery is achieved.
Students will begin reading almost immediately. Initially these tasks are very basic, and will engage newly learned words. This is not to be challenging, but to engage and drive home comprehension. Students shouldn\’t feel challenged by the basic reading that is taken from the start. Instructors are trying to engage verbal aspects, create good habits, and evaluate each student. Simply try to do your best, don\’t quit, and ask for help if you have troubles with certain words or pronunciations.
Sentence structure, and academic literacy comes after an initial lexicon is built. Without proper understanding of specific words, it is harder to form sentences and use the words properly. A structured approach that continually engages new vocabulary, places the words in sentences, and has more difficult sentence structure is the aim. If students are challenged to quickly with adding very difficult words, they are unable to properly use them.
Many classes will force verbal communication immediately. Students need to get over stage fright, and jump in. Everyone in the class is at the same level, so having fears or being hesitant to be judged should not be tolerated. Without engaging verbally in the new language, instructors are unable to check for understanding, and reinforce steps forward. Top stage English language learners are judged upon comprehension and verbal skills, these tasks are usually in an advanced stage 5.
Outside of classes students should look to practice as much as possible. Watching certain TV shows can help. Use of the computer can as well. Getting into chat rooms that are English only can be very helpful. Anything that forces to use new words, and trying to converse is great.
Practicing person to person is very good as well. Going into stores and talking to employees for help when shopping is a good task. Talking with friends will help as well. Anything that forces use of the language verbally is going to be productive in your learning, and help you to the next comprehension level.
Writing the language is something that should be focused upon. Keeping a diary can be helpful. The repetitive nature of writing out what you learned that day, listing new words, and their meanings can help with memory. Repetitious use of what you are learning will allow for easier retention. These are all parts of your expectations in a free English class for new immigrant.
