How To Eat Healthy While Traveling

It is easy to eat unhealthy food when you’re on the road. Road trips can consist of burger stops, chips, and soda, while airports offer all sorts of tasty, unhealthy treats like pizza, and even beer. Resisting the temptation of these unhealthy things is a matter of willpower, but if you decide you want to eat healthy there are options available to you.

For breakfasts, you have healthy options no matter where you are. If you’re in hotel and you’re eating at the free continental breakfast, go for the fresh fruit first. If you’re still hungry, try a low-fat yogurt, a whole grain cereal with skim milk, or a piece of whole grain toast. Skip the bacon, cheesy omelet, and the sugary processed foods like sweet cereal, muffins, and pastries.

For breakfast in a restaurant, an egg white omelet with vegetables like onions, peppers, tomatoes, and mushrooms is a good choice. Skip the cheese, unless it’s a low-fat cheese like feta or goat cheese. The restaurant may also have a fruit plate, which is an excellent choice for breakfast. Eat the water-based fruits like melons first, then berries, then citrus, then save the bananas for about an hour and a half later.

Breakfast in fast food restaurants has gotten healthier over the past few years. Now there are oatmeal options, as well as fruit and yogurt parfait options. If none of those are available, go for the breakfast burrito. At least it has a little less fat and a trace of a vegetable in it.

Rather than going to the fast food place, the service station may have healthier options. You can always eat a protein bar for breakfast. They are filling and they give energy. Make sure you read the label, as some manufacturers of protein bars use too much sugar.

For lunches and dinners, stick with vegetable-centric meals that offer a lean protein and a healthy starch. Soup is also a good option, as long as you choose a broth-based soup rather than a cream-based one. Salad is always a great option, and you can get salads with chicken or even lean steak on them. Just watch out for the croutons, which are loaded with fat, and fatty salad dressings like ranch, bleu cheese, or thousand island. Go with a light balsamic vinaigrette, if you must have salad dressing.
If you’re not a salad person, opt for the entree that is baked, broiled, grilled, or poached, rather than fried or sauteed. Make sure you get a vegetable side, and for a starch choose a half baked potato (with just a little bit of butter, hold the sour cream and cheese) over fries, and pasta with olive oil over pasta alfredo.

For sandwiches, choose whole grain bread to start. Sandwich chains that allow you to pick all your ingredients are best, since you control what goes on your sandwich. Load your sandwich with fresh vegetables, a lean protein, and try your best to skip the cheese. Also, avoid fatty sauces and spreads like mayonnaise and go for yellow mustard, oil and vinegar, or salsa instead. If you cannot get a fruit or vegetable side, go for baked chips, and skip the soda.

It is possible to eat healthy while traveling, it just takes a little bit of an extra effort.
