Ideally, you want to write with however many words it realistically takes to discuss a topic. This can be very few or this can be a lot, depending, obviously, on the issue you’re tackling.

However, many writing assignments do come with word count requirements.

As a rule, actual word counts can be 10% more or less than the required length. For published work, though, space may demand that you make as close to the exact cut as possible.

It can be very exciting to write while your mind starts to work endlessly about the topic. You can hit the word count limit right away and even you’ll get the chance to revise your writing to make it more interesting and well-structured without worrying the word count of every content that you’ll have to complete.

However, there are times where you end up staring blankly at your computer screens without even filling the word processor up with words that will help you describe the topic more. In other words, you don’t have any ideas on what to write and now you can’t think of any possible ideas to help you start your writing up. This is really bad especially if you can’t seem to hit the word count limit for every writing project you have.

But you are not alone. Most writers feel the same way as you do too and to overcome this bad writing experience is what you should set your attention to and for you to server your purpose in writing.

On the other hand, some writers also tend to write more than the expected word count limit. Do you think this is a good idea? Maybe, but only if you have no choice but to write it all down. However, it is not a good idea to write more as you tend to confuse your readers and at the same time, you’ll definitely write unnecessary statements and even words which can make your content poorly written, despite also the fact that you are bound to commit lots of writing mistakes if that will happen.

If you’re in the process of finishing up your last draft and suddenly discover you’re under the limit, try the following:

– Review the piece and check if you’ve fully answered the main question or fulfilled all required tasks. If you find a hole you can plug, use that to satisfy the requisite count.

– Read through the information you included for each sub-topic. Is there any information you can add to make them clearer? Do that.

– Check for any paragraphs that can use more discussion. Take the opportunity to expand your work using them.

-Go back to your arguments. Can any of them benefit from more evidence?

If you find yourself with too many words, on the other hand, you can try these:

– See if any information you included adds little to the main point. You can probably weed that part out.

– Check for unnecessary repetitions. If you need to reiterate information between multiple paragraphs, you can probably shorten the succeeding discussions to merely bring up the first iteration.
