How to Install a Home Solar Power System
Before installing a home solar power system you require to assess your power needs. This depends on the purpose of installing such a system as different set ups are required for different uses. For instance the set up of solar heating system may differ with the one used to light or power home appliances. If you are to use the system for powering your home appliances you have to compute the power needs in terms of voltage required by your appliances. This will help you to obtain the solar panels that can generate enough power for your needs.
After identifying your power needs make a list of items that you need to buy. For a standard solar power system that can be used to power home appliances and lighting you need the following:
1. Solar panels rated according to your power needs.
2. Rechargeable battery.
3. DC meter and an inverter.
4. Two lengths of differently colored insulated wires, preferably green and red.
5. Basic working tools like pliers, hand held drills.
6. Battery box.
Then the following instructions are carried out –
– Measure the distance between where you will place the battery to where you will place the solar panel and multiply it by two. This gives you the total length of the wire you need to join up your system.
– Place your solar panel in the most ideal place where it can get enough sunlight.
– Place the battery inside the battery box and place it in a safe place, preferably close to the appliances or the lighting system you want the system to power.
– Drill two holes on the battery box corresponding to the position of the negative and positive terminals of the battery and direct the two wires through the holes.
– Connect the red wire on the positive terminal of the battery and connect it the positive end of the output side of the DC meter as also the inverter.
– Do the same to for the negative terminals with the green wire (or any other color).
– Connect the positive end of input side of DC meter and also the inverter to the solar panels positive end marked (+).
– Repeat the same for the negatives for both the DC meter as well as the inverter.
– Connect the appliance you intend to power with the battery using the same procedure of negative to negative and positive to positive.
– Give the system an allowance of several hours to charge the system adequately before switching the appliance.
This is the standard procedure that can vary depending on the type of power system you are using. It is wise to consult an expert who can professionally install the system. For the system to perform optimally it must be correctly installed.
The location of the solar panel is critical for the system performance. The location should be safe from falling objects and should not be obstructed by shadows, buildings or trees. Clean the panels occasionally to get rid of debris and dust that may settle on the solar panel obstructing sunlight.
Author Bio: Solar power system is easy to install and offers an alternative source of power for your home use. It can supplement the existing power source and gradually be upgraded to replace other power sources completely with time. Over a period of time you can consult an experts and gain skills for subsequent upgrading of your system.
