The usual causes of damage to leather are improper care, playful kids, and pet scratches. However, repairing your furniture is simple and you can even do it alone.

Steps in Repairing Leather Furniture
1. Determine if the type of leather in the furniture can be repaired with do-it-yourself kits. Protected or top coated leather can usually be repaired at home. Just buy the repair kits from any store near you. Protected leather has a distinct grain pattern that has the same colour and appearance. Moreover, it is less delicate to scratching and les vulnerable to water, which helps it retain its colour longer.

2. Clean the leather and prepare the damaged surface of the furniture properly before starting repair. Wipe it clean with a soft cloth washed in water with a few drops of dishwashing detergent. Rinse the cloth well and wipe it again on the furniture until no soap residue is left. Let the leather dry first then wipe the area to be repaired with alcohol wipe.

3. Put a quality repair compound all over the furniture’s damaged area. Spread it about half an inch beyond the damaged part. Wet your finger with water and use it to wipe the compound software. Leave the compound to let it dry naturally. If you want it to dry up quickly, use hair dryer focused on the applied area. However, control the dryer up to low heat only and keep it six inches away from the repaired area to avoid cracking on the compound.

4. Smoothen the applied compound with 600-grit sandpaper or alcohol wipe. Wipe the dry compound with alcohol wipe carefully to avoid removing it from the leather surface. Let the area dry.

5. Apply clear or coloured protective coat on the damaged area. You can buy this with your furniture repair kit. Apply the first coat thinly, but do this application again until the entire repair area is completely covered. But after every application, leave the coating to dry first.

6. Put a leather conditioner on the newly repaired area. However, make sure that there is no ammonia in the cleaners to avoid damaging your leather finish and compound. You can even come up with a homemade cleaner and conditioners.

Importance of Preventive Care
Even if you already know how easy it is to repair leather furniture, it still pays to do preventive care so you can avoid having to go through the entire repair process again. For instance, you can keep polishing the leather furniture to cover minor scratches.
