The first aspect to address when there is mention of the word modern is to establish what it actually means. Many people often confuse the contemporary styling and design, in particular, as that. There is a distinct styling and design of modern furniture which also has a place in design history. This is often copied and revived.

Modern and this period are two totally different periods in art and design and this applies here as well. It does not mean that it cannot be contemporary as there are many interpretations which could make it fit into the category under discussion. It would, however, have to fall in a certain design style to be called that and it has to do with a number of factors.

The way to recognize it is to look at the line, shape, color and materials which were used. This type of furniture has clean lines and makes use of basic shapes such as the square, the circle and the rectangle. The last few years have seen a revival in this type of design. It is able to fit together perfectly and, hence, it makes for very practical and stylish decor.

The lines are, however, not only square and round, but include curves as well. The curves are used in sofas, chairs, tables and all parts of the home. The idea was based in affordability and functionality. Included in this time period was the use of the materials. They opted for acrylic, plywood and vinyl (instead of leather). The legs of chairs and stools were made from tubular metal (chrome) in particular and a lot of the seating and tables were also presented in clear acrylic.

It can especially be recognized by the use of neutral colors such as black, white and gray with primary colors and secondary colors interspersed. One other aspect of this type of chairs, tables and sofas are that they are also modular (including the some accessories). The most important aspect, though, is that it encapsulates the period of the fifties and the sixties.

The contemporary interpretation of this period, leaned heavily on designers such as Le Corbusier, Josef Hoffman, Arne Jacobsen and Eero Aarnio among others. Le Corbusier is captured in the square chair with chrome casing and its leather seating. Josef Hoffman\’s chairs are revived in the Kubus styled chairs for which he was famous.

Arne Jacobsen was known for his swan chairs. Eero Aarnio created the ball chair which was revived many times over in the last few years which included the hanging transparent ball chair. The best thing about this is that it has a lot to do with style, but for the most part the furniture was also comfortable as these designers were highly trained.

Their designs not only appealed to the senses but it was also ergonomically well-suited. The interpretations can only be exact if it is to capture that essence. It is especially very relevant as in the case of Le Corbusier who used the golden ratio in his designs.
