Is Acrosage a Safe Therapy?

Acrosage has been around since its development in the 1980s by then acrobat Benjamin Marantz. This type of alternative medical care addresses the various problems within the spine, neck, head and other parts of the body through the process of yoga-like performances.

This elevated yoga therapy simply focuses majority of its work on the spine and limbs of the patient, giving less importance to the face and head. The therapist uses shiatsu like procedures on the upper area of the client’s body during the massage therapy with his or her free hands while the patient is balanced on the massage therapist’s feet. Proper balancing is important with this process in order to conduct the massage technique in its correct and best performance. The therapist should never hesitate during transitions to ensure safe changes in the posture of the client.

Although this massage therapy has its own risks and contradictions like any of the other types of therapeutic massage, most of its sessions are successfully performed by its therapists. Just like the other therapies all over the world, acrosage has its disadvantages along with the benefits that it gives to the patients. Careful and calculated performances are required with this type of massage therapy as any wrong move will definitely result to either mild or severe injury.

It is completely safe though when done by professional therapists who have studied the human anatomy and honed their skills in performing the five different acrobatic postures conducted during the massage therapy. The client’s cooperation is required with this type of therapy which includes the bending of the knee, lifting up of the arms and many more. Heavier clients should trust his or her therapist when carrying them with their feet. The client should also let go of his or her fear and trust in his or her therapist in order to enjoy the massage therapy session. It would be best for the client to look for a massage therapist he or she is confident with.

Aside from the caution done by the massage therapist, a quick look at the patient’s medical records will also allow the therapist to distinguish any conditions that have contradictions with this therapy. Medical conditions such as those that are related with the eyes are often regarded as strictly prohibited. The reason for this is that the pressure going behind the eyes will increase due to the inverted posture during the therapy. Individuals with circulation disorders are also never qualified for this type of therapy due to the unique approach of this technique. The upside down position of the body will definitely trigger dizziness and discomfort on individuals with high blood pressure.

Although these precautions and safety measures are strictly followed, your doctor’s opinion and advice on this therapy should also be considered. Acrosage should never be used as a replacement for your regular medical treatment as it is limited only to certain conditions. This therapy however can be a great addition to your medical care as it is effective in doing what it does best which is to make the body relax.
