The Liga Privada No.9 is one of the Drew Estate’s Private Blends (Liga Privada) blended especially for Steve Saka who, when he arrived to take over the reins of the company as President, found that they didn’t produce any cigars in his preferred style or blend. That was the beginning of the Private Blend cigars. As word of it leaked out, massive demand for the No. 9 practically forced Saka to release it to the public. The only difficulty was the low availability of the Oscuro leaf used for the wrapper, forcing its very limited release.

Known only by word of mouth, the Liga Privada No.9 blend has become all the rage, far beyond its availability. Due to the popularity of Saka’s limited blend, the Drew Estate formulated and produced a similar Liga Privada blend using the more readily available Stalk Cut Habano wrapper for the Liga Privada T52. Both blends are packed with the finest tobaccos from Drew Estate’s farm in Esteli, Nicaragua.

The Flying Pig is an extremely oily, oddly shaped, thick perfecto cigar with a little corkscrew pig’s tail. It is so oily that some aficionados have even reported that the Liga Privada No. 9 actually leaves oil stains in the humidor.

The wrapper is incredibly dark and toothy and extremely firm to the touch, with no soft spots whatsoever. The prominent scents of oats, cedar, and cocoa, mixed with some pepper and coffee notes, are also found in the cold draw.

The Flying Pig lights up with extreme ease while the smooth draw produces a lot of thick, dark gray smoke. Though the aroma is on the light side, it is delightfully pleasant smelling with the clean, somewhat, pungent scent of cedar. The burn was surprisingly even, producing a very tightly packed, bright white ash that holds and holds and holds.

Not surprisingly, the first few draws of the Liga Privada No. 9 are highlighted with a short, but not too intense, bursts of pepper that each of the Liga Privadas starts off with. The spiciness fades quickly into a wonderfully sweet tobacco flavor, with undertones of cinnamon, spice, cedar, and just a hint of cocoa.

By the halfway point, the pepper has completely diminished, leaving the sweet tobacco, cocoa, and spice. As the cedar begins to intensify into a smooth creaminess, the retrohale becomes incredibly smooth, and clears the sinuses wonderfully. This is a VERY strong cigar that builds so gradually you almost don’t even notice it.

Despite the strength of the Liga Privada No. 9, the sweet creaminess with that touch of cedar, spice, and leather holds to the very end.

Though definitely not for the untrained palate, the Liga Privada No. 9 is a wonderfully smooth and creamy powerhouse of a cigar-just what you’d expect Steve Saka to enjoy, and thanks to him, now available to enthusiasts on a limited basis. If you come across one of these, BUY-even if you don’t appreciate the strength of this fine cigar, someone around you will!
