The average user is familiar with the technical parlances that are used while discussing about mobile phones. To a certain extent they know the relevance of such terms or words. Like all other machines and appliances that are made use of by the modern consumers, it is not easy to understand the impact of several technologies in the mobile phones. But consumers know what they want exactly from the products while they shop for them. The dealers provide them with the exact requirements.

The consuming world is fully aware of the various features that are available in the modern mobile phones. They know about the capabilities of various models, even though they may not be fully conversant with the significance of the technology which empowers the product with a particular capability. However people world over are able to identify the types of devices they require and learn to use them. Take the case of east African country, Kenya where large percentage of people cannot read and write. But people there are enjoying the benefits of mobile phones. According to reports one-fifth of the population of that country adopt mobile phones for cash transactions- contactless money transfer. The use of mobile phones for banking and other types of financial transactions are increasing in the least developed countries. The system offers people without bank accounts to make person to person payments, money transfers and pre-paid services through mobile phones. Such methods of transactions are cheaper than the conventional banking systems and also found much safer.

There were few erroneous perceptions about the widespread use of mobile phones. There was a school of thought, not long ago that the expensive device will help only the affluent segments of the society. In China and in India people who belong to the lowest strata of society are making use of mobile phones to enhance their incomes. About 128 million people in India became mobile phone subscribers in 2008, whereas it was 89 million in China according to some reports. Every sixth poor person in this world lives in India, but 70 percent of Indians out of 1 billion population have mobile phones. In China also the similar situation prevails. The mobile phones are no more luxury items for those underprivileged citizens. The device is helping the people with modest living standards to enhance their incomes. Experts point out that mobile banking methods are becoming popular among agricultural labourers, street vendors and artisans.

Mobile phones have proved that they have the potential to transform the society. New technologies are helping not merely to effect changes in lifestyles, but to improve the standards of living of people irrespective of their economic status. The phenomenon is akin to the changes that took place in UK and Europe in the 18th century after the historical event of Industrial Revolution.
