Reduce Heating Bills by Insulating Your Home and Save Energy

Using proper insulation is one of the easiest and most cost effective means of improving the overall energy efficiency of your home and saving cash on your fuel bills. In excess of 50% of all heat in your home can be lost through your walls, widows, flooring and roof space.

A lot of water tanks in homes have no insulation or the jacket is just not effective, so you must purchase a good thick jacket for the tank, as it will keep the water hot for much longer periods and this would pay for itself in a month or so.

Large amounts of heat are lost along the entire length of your hot water pipes. So the most important pipes to efficiently insulate are those in the coldest areas such as the roof space. Also those pipes that are closest to the hot water cylinder, as they are the hottest and will lose heat quicker than the rest.

If you have a boiler and a hot water tank, then it is vital to properly insulate the pipes in between. Insulate the pipes from the cylinder to your hot water taps because usually the first few yards are the most significant.

Try to heat only the rooms you use and turn down your radiators or perhaps close warm air grilles. Keep your doors and windows firmly closed, but you must check on rooms that are not heated for a while for signs of condensation or mould. Also try to keep your doors and windows closed when the heating is on and do not block ventilators spaces or air-bricks in your home.

Do close all curtains when it gets dark and do not have your furniture close to or directly in front of any radiators. If you have deep window sills, then your curtains should fall exactly on top of them and not overlap the radiator.

Any gaps between skirting boards and the floor should be filled in with a wood moulding, or with the type of fillers which you can buy from most D.I.Y. stores. Install heat reflective foil behind your radiators on external walls to keep the heat firmly inside your home. The shiniest side must be facing into the room and not the opposite.

Draught proof your home if it feels cold and fit draught strips on windows, external doors and the loft hatch. Also fill gaps in your floorboards and also below the skirting boards too.

More than 25% of your household energy bill can be saved by effective loft insulation and keep all heat inside your home. Most heat is lost through the walls of an average home than by any other path, and most homes built in the UK/US have cavity walls which can be filled with effective insulating materials. Installing cavity wall insulation is extremely effective in cutting your home bills.

Draught-proofed, single glazed windows do allow a lot of heat to be lost, but this heat loss through windows can be greatly reduced with double-glazing your home. Fitted double-glazing can be costly, but if you need new windows, then getting double-glazing fitted is a wise choice as it makes your rooms more comfortable and warm.

Install double-glazing in the rooms you use the most and on the largest windows initially. Effective double-glazing can halve the heat loss via your windows. Double-glazing with special low emission glass can reduce it even further.
