In this excerpt one quickly realizes the depth and urgency of the situation our lead character Kurt Reid is facing, a split second decisive action in an effort to survive. This is the pulp fiction novel, “Spy Killer,” by L. Ron Hubbard, a suspenseful, action packed tale that launches you into pre-communist China and Shanghai, the exotic city of mystery and death where Reid must find a way to prove he is innocent of the murder he is charged with.

Although Reid is a formidable character in his own right and always itching for a fight, he finds himself facing death with every decision he makes. Should he go into hiding from the Chinese government or take his chances with the Russian beauty “Varinka Savischna.” He decides to accept her offer of help in exchange for his assistance in her crusade against the Chinese government but soon finds himself way over his head.

Soon, a new character comes into play, Varinka’s friend, Anne Carsten, (Kurt’s ex-fiance) who has another offer for him. The absurdity of his situation only increases as both women (who each have something Kurt finds ideal in a women) seem to disappear and he gets captured by the Chinese warlord Lin Wang who offers him an new deal, escape punishment (for the crime he did not commit) and kill the Japanese spy named Takeki. Unfortunately, Reid recognizes Takeki and must make another difficult and dangerous choice.

Hubbard has an ability to weave intense plots with twists and turns that you don’t see coming. Mix in a little dangerous romance with exceptionally clever, if not grotesque villains that only intend your eventual demise and you have the perfect recipe for a suspenseful, action packed story to entertain you. Although Spy Killer was written and published in 1936, it still maintains the flavor of the cloak-and-dagger world of espionage and intrigue, where everything and everyone are not what they appear to be and is a classic that should not be missed.

“Spy Killer” is one of the 150 stories L. Ron Hubbard wrote for the pulp magazines of the 1930s and \’40s and is being re-released in paperback and audio books by Galaxy Press Publishing on Stories from the Golden Age.
