The Gulf Coast Claims Fiasco
The entire business of the BP oil spill has been nothing short of hell for the company, but perhaps not as big a hell as that the people who lost either their lives or their loved ones that have faced and are still facing. That\’s right, BP. The innocent people whose lives you shattered and then refused to take responsibility for are actually suffering a lot more than anything your miserly compensation can ever make up for, and definitely a lot more than the irreparable harm your company\’s reputation has received because guess what? You will still take money from people and thrive, but some people will have to work years before they will be able to get back the same support and stability from their environment and their incomes that they once had.
It has all been such an incredibly sorry affair. It was a disastrous accident, the oil spill was, but things would have still been easier and a whole lot simpler if BP had stepped up to the pedestal and accepted responsibility and promised to do their best to help the affected people build up their lives again. Instead the monstrous company with billions in revenue every year showed themselves to be almost heartless in the beginning of the affair especially when the CEO Tony Hayward acted like the whole thing was a huge inconvenience for him. He refused to answer vital questions in front of a committee; he refused to take responsibility and even worse, went off on a very public vacation to get away from it all. Unfortunately the poor people whose lives had been turned completely upside down by the oil spill didn\’t have the luxury of being able to take similar holidays to relieve the stress they just might have been feeling.
When BP finally took the decision to deal with the inevitable oil spill claims, it set up the Gulf Coast claims facility which specifically dealt with the BP claims. This claims facility, in a perfect world, would have paid out in a timely manner and would also have paid exactly what the victims of the oil spill needed. Instead it seems that British Petroleum took the whole Gulf Coast claims issue only slightly more seriously than its denial of any wrongdoing at the beginning of the entire sad event. It seems that the only thing the Gulf Coast claims facility is actually doing is to try to convince all claimants to take as little compensation money as possible and at the same time, sign an agreement to never sue BP over the oil spill catastrophe. Despite the fact that millions of BP oil spill claims have been filed to date, few have received final settlements that are more than acceptable to the claimant.
To deal with this problem, independent companies have been set up that are trying to help all those people who have filed claims with BP to get exactly the right amount of compensation and try and get their lives back together. Nothing is guaranteed but it is definitely worth a try.
