As a child, almost everyone starts out with that dream of playing shortstop for the New York Yankees when they first discover the game of baseball. As adults, we all know that there are only a very small percentage of kids who will ever rise to the level of a major leaguer. Even though only a handful of kids will ever advance to that level, there are still a lot of benefits to being given proper baseball equipment to play with. If they have the equipment and also get good baseball instruction, they will be able to improve their skills and eventually play in high school.

One of the biggest reasons that it is so important to get quality coaching when you are young is because that is when your fundamentals are developed. If you learn to hit, throw and catch the right way when you are a kid, it will allow you to more easily develop your skills as you advance through the levels leading to high school. If you do not have the opportunity to develop great fundamentals when you start out, it means you will be basically trying to relearn those skills each year that you continue to play. For example, you may be a great hitter as a 10 year old even if you have a bad swing, but as the pitchers you face get better it will be more difficult for you to keep pace with them.

Another reason that it is important to get quality coaching when you are young is so that you will develop the proper attitude toward the sport as well as your teammates. If you see high school kids who get angry when they strike out and throw the bat against the fence, it is because they learned that it was acceptable behavior when they were a kid. If they yell and scream at one of their teammates just after they made an error, they also learned that behavior as a youngster.

Having good coaching and instruction at an early age is important for another reason too, and it is pretty similar to how your child learns things in school. If you think back in school, you will remember that every year you started learning about the things that you already covered the previous year. The reason that you do this is because it is very difficult to retain all of the knowledge that you receive. In most cases, you learn the information and then forget it as soon as you move on to another topic.

However, if you have a really good teacher “this year”, the information will be much more familiar to you “next year” when you cover the same thing. Baseball is the same thing. Each year that you spend with a great coach makes it easier for you to start retaining the knowledge and skills that you learn for the coming years. You clearly cannot guarantee success in high school baseball based on the first few years of instruction your child gets. However, great coaching those first few years can go a long way in setting the stage to make it much easier for your child to start having success, and then to continue building on that success.
