The dry tropical climate and rough hilly terrain of this tropical island caused it to be unsuited for agricultural purposes. Other islands of the French West Indies experienced early growth and plantation development, while this one remained poor and unspoiled. Since about 1970 its turn has come to shine. This place was named in 1746 by its discoverer, Christopher Columbus, for his brother Barthelemay. Belonging to the Leeward Islands, it is located in the North East Caribbean, 160 miles East of Puerto Rico. Its neighbors include Antigua, St. Martin, and St. Kitts.

It is a volcanic island of 8 square miles (21 sq km) and is fringed with sandy beaches and coral reefs. The highest elevation is 938 feet (286 M). By 1852 the island was devastated by earthquake and again later by a fire. It was sold back to France in 1878.

The official language is French but English is increasingly spoken, especially in the restaurants and hotels. The population of 8,800 is predominantly European descendants of early settlers, and new residents from North America.

The island is visited by 200,000 visitors a year. About 70,000 of them stay at the 25 small hotels, and more than 400 rental villas. The remainder are passengers on visiting luxury boats.
