Transmission Trouble? Read This
There could be any number of reasons for your transmission problem but the one thing transmission issues all have in common is that they are in need of immediate attention. In order to avoid costly repairs, it is best to have it sorted out sooner than later. Those car owners who think a leak or two can wait, or that their engine’s slow response time is nothing to worry about may be surprised at the serious problems they encounter later on. If you think you are in need of a transmission rebuild, do not wait until your car stops running to take care of the issue, you should take it in to a garage to find out the specific nature of the problem as soon as possible.
Because a car is constantly shifting gears whether you are doing it manually or the car does it automatically, there is a constant degree of friction happening in the gearbox. And this means that there are a number of problems which a gearbox may encounter. An important part of maintaining the gearbox is ensuring that the fluids are maintained. Car owners must top up the fluids on a regular basis, and they must be sure that the oil is changed on a regular schedule or after a certain number of miles. Old or dirty oil can be just as troublesome as a lack of oil. The dirt picked up by a dated oil supply can cause unwanted damage to the gears.
If you can see puddles of oil on your driveway after the car has been left standing on it, do not ignore the problem. Another telltale sign of transmission trouble is that the gears are not responding properly, or taking too long to go up or down. If this problem is put off, a driver may find that the car will eventually stop responding to his efforts to accelerate. Such a troublesome issue may turn deadly in traffic, and is not a detail to be overlooked. Car owners must be responsible for their own safety and that of other drivers and have such problems considered by a professional mechanic as soon as they are discovered.
Worn gears are another problem that is best not left for later repair. Replace worn gears as quickly as possible; the gearbox may seize up if the gears become too problematic. A lack of maintenance may result in further trouble down the road and no one wants to be caught in traffic when an engine starts to fail.
Gearboxes may sometimes suffer from problems which no mechanic seems able to fix. When this is the case, the box must be taken apart and reassembled. Usually the act of disassembling and putting it back together is enough to rid the box of the problem. However, this is not a task for the uninitiated. Drivers should not let anyone other than a professional mechanic go anywhere near their gearbox. When a driver finds a mechanic they like, they should work to strengthen the relationship with that mechanic and a driver may just find that this is the best way to received transmission advice.
