Chances are that based upon the article title, you do not really know what this article is about. I can even tell you that this is about something that people refer to as foam core, foam board or gator board, and you still do not know what it is. However, if I tell you that I am talking about a board-like item that has paper on both sides of it and has styrofoam in between the sheets; you probably know exactly what I am talking about.

One of the really great benefits of using foam board is the level of flexibility that it gives you. It is extremely light weight, so you do not have to worry about it being too heavy to use in the way that you need to use it. However, it is also very strong. It may not seem like it would be strong because it is mostly styrofoam but it is. The paper that is attached to both sides of the core adds a great deal of strength and stability to the board. Another thing that makes foam core so popular for many different uses is the fact that it is easy to cut to any size that you need. All you have to do is cut through the paper on one side, fold the board and then cut through the paper on the other side.

The fact that you can paint foam core as well as glue things to it, adds to its flexibility. The way that you can use it is virtually unlimited. In fact, if you have some of this in your house, you will eventually find many other useful ways to use it that no one has ever thought about before. Many people use this as the backing material for framing art. Since it is lightweight, it does not add to the weight of the picture. However, it does make a solid backing to the picture that is being framed. Another popular use of foam board is to use it as a display board. It is especially useful for things like school projects and science fairs. Because of the styrofoam, it is very easy to use pushpins, etc to post signs and things of that nature. It is also very easy to tape multiple boards together to give you a dual or tri-fold display.

The same thing that makes it great for displays, also make it a good choice if you are making a sign. Whether you are making a sign for your car wash, garage sale or something more professional, foam core is a great choice. College students love foam core too because it is a cheap way to make a bulletin board. You could use corkboard in a similar manner, but that will be much more expensive for you.

Professionals in photography and filming also frequently use foam core. Big white pieces are used to help direct the light to the subjects faces for particular shots. They are easy to use because they are so light, and if they are properly placed, the light bounces to the specific place that needs additional lighting.
