5 Steps to Stay Healthy Even As You Age
As you grow older, besides the typical changes in appearance, you will notice and feel a lot of changes in your body, and how it copes with the daily routine. Now, aging should in no way alarm you for it is a very natural progression of normal life. But you must understand that your mind and body are simultaneously undergoing a change, and must accordingly adapt yourself.
Food is Still Important
As you age your general activities slow down, so does the energy requirement of your body. While eating lesser quantity of food is natural, you must ensure your diet is nutritious with low salts and fats. With age the muscle mass reduces so you must have sufficient protein foods like eggs, fish, soy and small quantities of dairy products. Also have plenty of vegetables and fruits, for they not only are healthy but also supply the required carbohydrates. And drink plenty of water daily.
Continue Exercising
With age, exercise becomes more vital to retain mobility of your joints and also to keep many diseases at bay with a fitter body. But you must realize the limitations of age and choose exercises that are gentler on your body, like walking or doing yoga under a yoga instructor. Remember what’s important is that you exercise on a regular basis. If you have any health conditions it is better to consult your doctor who may advise if certain exercises should be avoided.
Monitor Your Health
Your age will definitely have an effect on the body, typically to the skin, mouth, hearing, bones, joints, muscles, digestive system and urinary tract. So it is very important that you go for regular checkups as prescribed by your doctor to closely monitor your body, with special attention to blood pressure, blood sugar levels and your weight. Also remember to take all the required medications regularly, because any lapse might interfere with the normal working of your body.
Mind Your Mind
Many people tend to feel depressed in old age, maybe due to a restricted lifestyle after retirement, shrinking social circles and general limitations of the body. But you must guard yourself against this by keeping a positive frame of mind and indulging in activities that make you feel better. Your mind will remain sharp with activities, so indulge in reading, solving puzzles, and socialize whenever possible. Another thing to remember is that with age minor memory lapses are natural, so don’t let that worry you, just write down names and numbers or anything that you want to remember. Whatever you do, stay optimistic and spread that feeling around.
Sleep Well
Sleep is important at any age, but it can get irregular with age due to medications, reduced activities etc. Ensure that you have a comfortable sleeping environment and as far as possible try to have a regular sleeping routine.
Your aging process cannot be stopped, but if you make some sensible choices and take it in your stride, you will age in a more healthy and graceful manner.
