A Basic Guide to Mens Underwear

Mens underwear has progressed in recent years. From a simple choice between boxers and briefs, there are now hundreds of styles, brands and fabrics to choose from. In recent years there has been as much attention paid to developing new styles for men\’s, as there has in women\’s lingerie. Now that there is a style to suit any man, traditionalist, sportsman or trendsetter, the sky is the limit in the under clothing department.

Stylists and designers recognize the need to cater to the different needs and wants of the male shopper. The traditionalist would be sticking to basics such as briefs in a soft cotton and plain black, white or grey. The sport playing man would probably require his underwear to have performance enhancing style and moisture-wicking fabrics. The trendsetter on the other hand, would be interested in colour, pattern and style.

Choosing the correct underwear has to take into account the clothing it is to be worn under. A Cotton boxer under a pair of low rise straight-leg jeans is just not going to work. Having your undies bunched up around your thighs and ballooning above your hips does not make for comfort. A more fitted pair of low-rise briefs or trunks would be better suited on this occasion. Under loose fitting suit trousers or cargo pants the boxer is ideal.

Traditional briefs have a waistband that sits high at the waist, sporting either an overlap fly or a contour pouch and offers full coverage. Also available is a mid-rise or low-rise garment, each sitting slightly lower on the hips. The bikini brief is cut higher on the leg, with form-fitting design and the support of the regular brief. Less likely to ride up than other styles, they are favoured for comfort and support. The brief is suited to be worn under any and all types of trousers and shorts.

Based on shorts, the boxer is a comfortable, loose fitting garment that covers the body from the waist to mid-thigh with a working fly front. Boxers also come in a full cut version, which is longer and looser, often with a U shaped panel between the legs to reduce chafing and increase wearing comfort. The tapered boxer has a slimmer fit with side vents on the legs for freedom of movement.

The trendy boxer brief is a form fitting garment with coverage from waist to mid-thigh. This is a pair of underwear that offers you the comfort of a brief along with the coverage of the boxer. Often designed to include a fly front, they also come in a shorter version known as trunks. Loosely styled to mimic the bathing trunks of the early fifties, these garments are popular with both men and women, who find them visually appealing.

Gone are the days of scratchy, functional wool for undies. Today the fabrics used to manufacture men\’s undergarments range from silk to sporty to eco-friendly, each with their own benefits. Fabrics that echo the properties of performance clothing are chosen by the more athletic man. They offer enhanced moisture absorption as well as flexibility and support. Organic fabrics such as cotton, bamboo and soy are being experimented with. They feel similar to cashmere in softness and are also super absorbent, wicking away any moisture.

If you are still dazed and confused by the choices on offer, take a moment. Step back and relax. The person most affected by your selection is you. Wear the underwear that suits you and your lifestyle. More importantly, you should be wearing underwear that you are comfortable in.
