A List of Basic First Aid Supplies
Accidents can happen anywhere and at anytime. It can be useful to keep some basic first aid supplies to hand wherever you are. Ideally you should keep some in your home, in your car and in your workplace. The equipment you store could help to fix up a minor scrape or it could play an important role in keeping somebody safe while waiting for the emergency services to arrive.
The most basic thing you should keep at home and on your travels is some plasters. They usually come in a variety of sizes to suit different situations. Long thin strips are good for finger cuts while large square plasters are good for cuts and scrapes on larger surfaces of the body. Fabric plasters generally stay on a bit better, however bright colored plastic ones need to be used if working with food. It is important to get ones which do not contain latex as some people are allergic to this.
For larger bleeds a cotton pad and bandage may be more suitable than a plaster. A thick cotton pad can be placed over the area before winding a stretchy bandage around it to hold it in place. It is a good idea to have a large amount of bandage that can be adapted for different sized bleeds. This set up can help stem the flow of blood until the wound can be looked at professionally.
Alongside the bandages you will need to keep safety pins and scissors. You will need scissors to cut the bandage to the right length. Once the bandage has been wound around the cotton pad you can secure it with one or two safety pins.
Before you dress a wound it is important to make sure that it is as clean as possible. Any dirt left inside could cause an infection later on. The best way of cleaning a wound is to use antiseptic wipes. These usually come in their own individual packets so that you can use one and then throw it away in order to stop any bacteria from spreading.
It could be wise to keep a burns kit near your kitchen. These usually contain dressings that are specially designed to be used on burns as well as special gels that can be applied to the burn in order to soothe it and protect it. They can also contain special eyewash solutions for cleaning the eyes and wounds.
If you travel in the car a lot it may be a good idea to carry an emergency foil blanket with you. In an emergency situation this could help you or somebody else to stay warm. Staying warm can help stop the body from going into shock. It is also a good idea to carry some disposable vinyl gloves with you in case you need to dress some wounds. Wearing gloves can help limit the spread of infection.
Make sure that you are prepared for every eventuality by keeping some First aid kit supplies with you in the various areas of your life. You never know when they may come in handy and you could potentially help to save a life by using them.
