Abhyanga – Maintaining Doshas
Although massage therapy types all around the world do vary in styles and techniques, they all have the same goal in alleviating the condition of the patient. All of the therapeutic massages are focused in providing treatment and healing to the individual receiving the therapy. Most of these also contribute in delivering a relaxing and calming experience for the comfort and luxury of the patient during the massage therapy session.
Abhyanga is a form of bodywork that is based on the Ayurvedic principles used to treat certain types of disorders and conditions in order to attain good health. The techniques used are similar to the other types of Ayurvedic massages that use long gliding strokes that are essential in providing both relief and relaxation.
In an abhyanga massage therapy session, the massage therapist takes the liberty of using large amounts of massage oils on the body of the client which is similar to most practices of Ayurvedic massages. The most common types of massage oils used for this type of natural treatment is either coconut or sesame oil. Herbs and plant extracts are also included on the massage oil to strengthen the healing power and soothing effect of the medium to the body of the patient. The therapist then stops for a while and lets the oils sit on the skin before proceeding with the massage strokes. This process is done while the client lies peacefully on a massage table with only his or her underwear while the masseuse works all over the body. The therapy is unlike other types of therapeutic massage that can be received in any part of the day as it is usually done in the morning for best results and effects. However, there can be exemptions in this type of massage as it can also be done anytime.
Like any type of massage therapy, abhyanga follows the principles of maintaining 3 doshas or characteristics in the client in order to keep a healthy constitution.
– Vatta (air and space)
– Pitta (fire and water)
– Kapha (water and earth)
Any imbalance on these three will eventually result to negative effects on the physical health of a person. The only way to treat and bring back his or her health is to realign or rebalance the doshas inside the body. The therapist uses herbal medicines mixed on the special massage oil in order to increase the effect of the massage as he or she corrects the 3 characteristics or doshas in the client’s body.
Self massage is also taught on the clients during the massage therapy session in order for them to be able to heal and keep their health in good condition outside the therapy room. It is a great way to treat conditions without even going to the massage spa and setting appointment with your masseuse. Self care can be done anywhere and anytime you want, especially whenever painful conditions attacks your physical body. It can also be done as a means of treating your body with a relaxing and luxuries experience.
