All About Distributorship
If you’re among the growing number of people who have decided that a second career is what you want to do as you near or are in retirement, then a distributorship might be exactly what you are looking for today. In difficult economic times, career opportunities may be harder to find, and this is another way to look outside the box to earn extra income, or develop new career pathway.
Effectively, this type of an agreement, sometimes known as a distributorship or franchise agreement, could be called being “the middle man.” This means that you would buy goods from a manufacturer directly.
The advantage to this type of an arrangement is that you would pay just slightly over the manufacturer’s cost for the products or goods. Then, you would go on to sell the items that you purchased to other retailers, dealers, and businesses at a higher price which is where your profit margin comes in.
Another way to describe a distributorship would be to call it a wholesale agreement. Many retail businesses do not buy in big enough quantities to be able to buy directly from the manufacturer, yet they need to be able to procure their products at a price that would still allow them to turn a profit.
That is where a distributorship comes in handy. Acting in this capacity, you would have the products in stock that you purchased directly from the company that makes them.
You set your price for these items to a place that is the middle ground between what you paid for them and what the retailer will offer them for in their place of business. This is how you make a profit but still offer the merchandize to the retailer at a price where they can also retain revenue from selling it as well.
The advantages to this type of a business would be many. You could build a clientele list quickly, and, if you were able to deliver what the retailers needed, you would have the repeat customers that are crucial to any distributorship.
Before you enter into this type of an agreement, you will have to decide exactly what merchandize you will be offering. You will then also have to complete the appropriate licensures for your state as the laws for this type of a business, as with many others, vary greatly from state to state.
Then you would have to devise a budget that would include finding or building a warehouse and hiring a staff. Learning how to be self employed is a must, but community colleges and career builders can help with that.
Once you have all of that squared away, then it’s time to set about finding a manufacturer that will accept you as a distributor. Sometimes the larger corporations and companies aren’t taking on new distributors, so you might have better luck going with the smaller businesses at first.
It is crucial that you be able to get the best deals so that you can pass along the savings to your retailers. You can also try to get great warranty deals for your retailers to pass along to their customers as well.
This would be a great idea for a second career or as an over 50 job because, once everything is put into motion, this type of a business could easily run itself without a great deal of fuss.
