Baby Rabbits – The Best Food For A Young Rabbit
Similar to humans, young rabbits need more attention and care compared to the grown up ones. During this stage, they are not yet capable of taking care of themselves that’s why you need to address their needs well. The mother rabbit can actually take care of her your ones if she is around. She can feed them with her milk which is known to be the best food for young rabbits. But there are times when a mother rabbit does not take care or feed her little ones. So you have to closely monitor on this matter. Once the pregnant rabbit gives birth, carefully observe if she is feeding her little ones for the first 48 hours after giving birth. If she does, then there won’t be too much work for you to do. You can just make sure that the mother rabbit gets all the food that she needs in order to produce enough milk for her young ones. But if you notice that the mother rabbit does not take care of her little ones, then you can take over.
You have to be the one to take care of the young rabbits. Make sure that they are comfortable inside their shelter and keep them warm. But above all, you have to pay more attention to the type of foods that you are going to feed to your young rabbits. Although they will not be able to get the best food for them because their mother is not taking care of them, you have to look for a good alternative. For instance, you can purchase canned kitten formula that are sold in pet shops and other stores. Then you can place the formula in a kitten feeding bottle and you can start feeding the young rabbits. You can also add Lactobacillus Acidophilus to the formula because this is good for the little ones.
Now that you already know what you are going to feed them, the next thing that you should know is the appropriate amount that should be given to the young rabbits. You have to remember that as they grow older, the amount of the formula that you are going to feed them will also change. During the first week, you can give them about 5 cc of the kitten formula and about 1/2 cc Lactobacillus Acidophilus. After a week, you can increase the amount of the kitten formula and the Acidophilus. You can increase the kitten formula into 15-25 cc and the Acidophilus to 1 cc. You can feed them twice a day or several times a day provided that you are only going to given small amounts of foods. You can do this until they reach 4 weeks old then they can be weaned off on the formula.
And of course, aside from feeding them properly, you also need to clean them. You just have to gently wash their faces and bottoms using cotton and warm water. You should do this after you feed them to remove the formulas from them.
