CBSE Schools – Losing the Deal?
Indian government policies have recently brought about a series of reforms and measures that are designed to ‘revive’ CBSE schools all over the country as attempt to make them survive. Competition from international schools and the decline in the standards of CBSE schools has poised serious questions about their survivals. What’s the need if people prefer other forms of school boards?
Problems with the CBSE schools:
– Although there is no doubt that people are more inclined towards international schools, there still remains a mass population that depends on a ‘cheap’ form of education that CBSE schools provide. There is the basic problem of accommodating the needs of the ever increasing number of students. Imagine a small, ill-maintained classroom with a lot of students trying to focus on a tiny blackboard and one teacher standing in the middle of the room – awful, isn’t it? This is the case with many CBSE schools across the nation.
– It’s high time that international governments fix the situation and increase the area for the possible expansion of CBSE schools. Although there have been a few schemes where several of these schools have been extended, and several have been renovated to improve the learning environment, further improvement is essential.
– Lack of extra-curricular activities in most CBSE schools is yet another concern that has bothered parents. School is only a place to get formal education, take an exam, and go back home. The definition of school includes all activities that help one developing his/her personality. It’s a place to learn and a place to experience something new, something that is not reflected by most CBSE schools.
– Arranging a speech conference once a year is not enough. Parents nowadays are more aware that they need to get their children enrolled in an institution that not only nurtures the mind of the students, but also aims for their physical development. (e.g. schools with lots of sporting events, a swimming pool, special days like ‘library week’)
The need to revise the syllabus for CBSE schools:
Most educational groups unanimously agree that the syllabus currently enforced by CBSE needs some dire improvements. There have been no or very little amendments made to it in the last few decades. This is where CBSEs are losing the deal as compared to international schools. With quickly moving trends and the ever changing world, studies need to be transformed to keep up with the requirements of society. For instance, the accounting course offered in CBSE schools is of little significance in the mega-marketing society today, especially with the advent of bodies like ACCA. This is also the case with almost all other subjects. A more updated approach towards studies will surely do the trick.
Are teachers good enough?
There is no doubt about the qualifications of most of the teachers in CBSE, but there is a need of retraining them with more advanced techniques and methods. They should be trained to teach in a way that does not surpass the learning capabilities of the pupils. Parents tend to complain that teachers are over extending the young minds of their children. Plus, the overly difficult tests and exams in a short span of time are only pressuring them which consequently makes them under perform in an academic setting. There are reports that in CBSE schools, due to lack of teachers, a math teacher is also made to teach science or other subjects unrelated to his qualifications. All of this has contributed to the decline in the popularity of CBSE schools in India.
