Although most people are law-abiding people who go through life in a responsible manner, there are certain occasions where people drink and drive. Society pretty much looks the other way at these times, although the law might not.

Think about it. If there were not many customers for happy hours on week days – read commuters on the way home from their nine to fives – then bars and lounges would not host them. The rule of thumb is one shot of hard liquor, one beer, or one glass of wine an hour. That is the amount of alcohol the average person can drink and process, so their blood alcohol will not be above the legal limit.

But get real, right? How many people knock back a couple of beers during a quick stop on the way home and still get home in time for dinner, so their spouses do not have to try to keep a meal hot? Most of the time, the stop will be an hour at most, making the alcohol intake twice the recommended amount.

Of course, many of those who hurry home with no stop-overs still have a glass of wine (which is very easy to top off) or a beer while making dinner. And then, if at the last minute a quick trip to the local store for a missing ingredient is needed, do they hesitate? Most do not, and they don\’t walk there, either, but take the car so the errand is as fast as possible.

Weddings are another notorious venue for over-indulgence in alcoholic beverages. Although every one arrives sober, there are almost invariably open bars for the reception. Although these may be closed during dinner, there is generally a choice of white, red, or rose wine to complement the food. Since the hotel or restaurant – or the caterer – makes a profit off each bottle of wine sold, the staff is assiduous in refilling glasses that are less than a third full.

Then the bride and her father open up both the dance floor and the bars, and things can get rowdy. For this reason, many guests take rooms at the hotel so they won\’t have to drive, but most will be driving home. Even though the driver might be less intoxicated than the passengers, it is seldom true that anyone is entirely sober. None of those in the vehicle are probably truly considering the magnitude of the risk being run by all on the road during that trip home.

Other traditional gatherings where a little too much alcohol is usual are: Super Bowl parties, poker nights, twenty-first birthday parties, gourmet dinners where carefully chosen wine is served with each course, and retirement parties. Add a few others to the list from personal experience.

Although there are certain occasions where people drink and drive, most of the time everything works out OK and everyone slides home under the radar in safety. However, it is unwise to not acknowledge the risk you run for yourself and others. Maybe it is time to rethink priorities – and always take a cab.
