Different Types of Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain Veneers are teeth coatings made of porcelain or ceramic material; they are used to rectify certain teeth conditions such as discoloration, gaps, cracks, chips and uneven teeth. These veneers are carefully placed on the surface of the affected teeth. They aid in concealing a person’s dental faults and creating a better appearance and as a result a more attractive smile. The veneers are designed to fit perfectly at the front of the teeth surface, and they are cemented onto the teeth by cosmetic dentists.
There are four different types of porcelain veneers, namely, feldspathic/stacked, pressed, leucite reinforced pressed and lithium disilicate porcelain veneers. Though they share certain similarities, they have different characteristics as in strength, shaping, color intensity, thickness and the patients’ dental requirements, which will determine the choice of veneer.
Procedure:
To have a porcelain veneer procedure carried out, a patient is required to make at least two visits after the initial consultation with the cosmetic dentist. During the consultation stage, it is advisable to state what you are looking to achieve from the process, so that the cosmetic dentist can take it in mind when he performs the procedure. The cosmetic dentist will make a representation or mold of your teeth, which will be used to create the porcelain veneer. There are two ways to do this; these can be fashioned in a laboratory, and this usually takes a couple of weeks to formulate; or alternatively if the cosmetic dentist has a dental laboratory and the technology necessary to create the veneers, the procedure can be done in one day.
During the placement of the veneers, a patient may choose to have anesthetic administered to ease discomfort. An amount of enamel from the tooth/teeth is scraped, as the cosmetic dentist cleans and carves the teeth, which is typically in proportion to the size of the veneers that will be placed on the tooth’s surface.
The cosmetic dentist ensures that the veneers can fit by positioning them on the teeth first, and reshaping them if necessary, before fixing them permanently on the teeth. He/she will also ascertain that the color resembles the rest of the teeth. The veneer is then cemented onto the tooth/teeth and using ultraviolet light or laser, the porcelain veneer is bonded to reinforce it to the tooth/teeth. Follow up visits to the dentist after the procedure is necessary, and it is also advisable to stay away from hard foods like carrots and nuts to prevent any damage like cracks or fractures to the porcelain veneers.
Advantages and Disadvantages:
Porcelain veneers are very strong and will last for a long time. A patient who gets these veneers can be guaranteed years of perfect smile. These are also seemingly more realistic thus they appear natural. In addition to this, they do not stain easily, which means that perfect smile is retained for years to come. The downside however is that if they accidentally chip or break, there is no easy way to fix them but to have another procedure done. The patient would have to get new porcelain veneers in such a case. Moreover, it’s important to note that once you get the veneers, you cannot revert back to not having them. This is a result of all the shaping, scraping and polishing that takes place before placing the veneers, which leaves the teeth bare of enamel and rough.
Cost:
A significant factor to be considered prior to getting porcelain veneers is the cost. Though it will vary depending on the cosmetic dentist, type of porcelain veneers, use of anesthetic or not and many other factors, the average cost of this procedure ranges from $750 – $2500 per tooth. It is worth noting however, that the porcelain veneers will usually last for at least fifteen years.
