Fixing a Toilet That Continues to Run Water
If you are lucky enough to own your own home, there are many problems that crop from time to time that need to be fixed. Regular maintenance is just part of owning a home. Some of those maintenance items are easy to manage and fix yourself. This can be done even if you do not have a lot of experience as a handyman. However, there are other things that need fixed that people are more reluctant to undertake on their own. Fixing a toilet is one of those items. You may think that you need to contact a plumbing repair company at the first sign of trouble, but that may not be the case. Here are some things that you can do to try to fix this problem on your own. If they do not work, you should contact a toilet repair company.
If the water in your toilet runs more often than it should, it is usually one of three different problems. The water level in the tank is too high, there is a problem with the chain or there is a problem with the rubber flapper. The inside of the toilet tank has a hollow tube. If the water is running over the top of it, you need to lower the water level by adjusting the float. Do not panic, this is not as hard as you may think.
There is a big balloon in your toilet tank. As the tank fills with water, this balloon raises to the top. When it reaches the top, the water shuts off and stops running. You just need to change the top level. Start by finding the rod that is connected to the balloon. There should be a screw at the top of the end of the rod. All you have to do is use a standard screwdriver to lower or raise the level where the balloon should be. You may need to experiment by flushing the toilet a few times to get it right, but the adjustment is very easy to make.
The second most common problem is having an issue with the chain. When the chain is too long, it can get caught under the trap. This prevents the trap from completely closing. If the chain is too short, it can also prevent the trap from closing. A pair of needle nose pliers (the pliers that are a little pointy on the end) will easily allow you to bend the links of the chain so that you can make the necessary adjustments.
The third problem you need to look at is a problem with the flapper itself. This item can easily get cracked which allows water to leak through it. You should be able to use the same needle nose pliers to disconnect the flapper from the chain. You can then take it to your local hardware store to make sure that your replacement is exactly the right size and shape. Hook the chain back up to the new flapper and you are good to go.Stewart Wrighter has often called on the expertise of a Dayton plumbing repair specialist to fix plumbing issues in his large office building.
