How To Earn Respect In The Classroom

As a teacher, it is very important for you to earn the respect of all your students inside the classroom – only then that you will be able to teach them well. Gaining your students’ respect is undoubtedly not an easy task; it is easier said than done. But for the purpose of establishing a good student-teacher relationship, which is a key for better learning, you should be the one to make the first move to gain your students’ respect. This would be very challenging for you especially if you are going to deal with kids. This is basically because they are not yet completely aware on the right and wrong things. So, you have to double your effort in this case.

When talking about anything related to respect, there is a golden rule that you have to take into consideration and that is treating your students the way you want them to treat you. This rule actually works all the time and this is definitely the best thing that you can do to start with. Then you have to prove to the children that you really respect them. In this way, they will be more encouraged and motivated to doing the same thing to you. But of course, you have to make them understand on what are the actions and words that would make them disrespectful so that they would know the difference. There will be times when they become disrespectful but they did not really mean to be disrespectful. Be the model and show them how to be respectful to other people.

No one is perfect. This is a fact that you should let your students know. Make them understand that you are not perfect and so are they. Imperfection is one of the things that all people actually have in common. This is one way of letting the children know that there are times when you commit mistakes and perhaps lose control of things. What’s important is that you acknowledge the mistakes done and apologize. Kids would be more comfortable and connected with you.

Listening is also another way to earn the children’s respect. Normally, children have a lot of demands to you and you have the choice to ignore them. It is very easy to ignore their demands but you should give them your attention. It is important to make the children know that you are concerned about them and the best way to let them know about this is by listening. You have to make them feel that you really care for them as well as for their education.

However, you still need to set some rules and regulations to be implemented inside the classroom. There should be a time when the children can play with the toys and when they have to give all their attention to you. Establish yourself as the authority and hold the children responsible for their actions. So when they do something wrong, they would not think that they can just run to you and then do the same thing afterwards.
