For those of you missing your favourite sweets from America, there are ways you can buy American confectionery in the UK. There are a number of online shops selling sweets from across the pond, and some have their own physical shops too. If you search for American sweets online, you’ll be introduced to a number of retailers who stock and sell all of the tasty treats that are probably a distant memory to you now.

There are hundreds of American sweet types available in the UK but there are also hundreds that aren’t. The UK may have a particular American sweet brand but more often than not in smaller variety flavours – this is where buying from American sweet retailers comes in handy. Whether you want to try a new flavour that sounds appealing or buy a flavour that you tried while in the US, you can purchase your foreign treats online.

Here are a few examples of American treats that can be bought in the UK through specialist American sweet retailers. Some of the sweets are readily available in UK but there are certain flavours that won’t be available unless you scour the internet.

Baby Ruth
Baby Ruth is an American candy bar with peanuts, caramel and chewy chocolate-flavoured nougat covered in yet more delicious chocolate. Baby Ruth was originally owned by the Curtiss Candy Company but later bought by Nestle. The name ‘Baby Ruth’ has been the subject to lots of legal battles. The candy bar ‘Baby Ruth’ sounds very familiar to a famous baseball player at the time called Babe Ruth but the Curtiss Candy Company claimed it was named after President’s Cleveland’s daughter, Ruth Cleveland. People were sceptical of this explanation and saw it as a diversion so the company did not have to pay the baseball player loyalties. The candy bar was named in 1921 and this correlates with the rise of Babe Ruth’s fame.

Skittles
You’re probably wondering why Skittles are in the mix? Skittles are widely available in the UK but only certain flavours, the US has a much wider selection of flavours. Skittles were first introduced by a British company in the early 70s and then in the US in the early 80s. They come in a variety of flavours including the original (which is also stocked in the UK), Tropical, Wild Berry, Crazy Cores, Crazy Sours, Ice Cream, Double Sours, Mints and Blenders.

Mentos
Similar to Skittles in the fact that Mentos has a larger selection in the US than here in the UK. Mentos were first introduced in the Netherlands in the 1950s as a hard-coated mint with a chewy inside. Mentos come in a huge array of flavours including cinnamon, grape, raisin, strawberry yoghurt, lemon yoghurt, watermelon and many, many more! A popular experiment with Mentos hit the internet a couple of years ago, when a mint Mentos is dropped into a carbonated drink it releases carbon dioxide causing a foamy explosion (especially when fizzy drink is confined to a bottle).
