How to Prevent Water Damage
Nobody wants to deal with water damage in their home or in their business. It can cause many different kinds of problems and that is after you have spent the time and money to clean up the mess. Luckily, if you have water damage, there are many qualified companies who can help you clean it up, but it is an expense you probably did not plan for. The best you can do in order to prevent this problem is to take some steps to prevent the problem from occurring in the first place.
In addition to the cost, another problem you have to worry about is mold. This can cause many health problems in the future so if there is any chance of mold damage, even more of the structure may have to be cleaned and/or replaced. Of course, if you have this problem you will also likely have the added expense of replacing the furnishings, floors, etc. depending upon the extent of the damage. A lot of the times, this problem can occur from old pipes in either your bathroom or your kitchen. These can be pipes that just leak but sometimes these pipes can actually burst.
The first thing that you should do to prevent mold is to make sure your bathroom has an exhaust fan. The reason that this is important is because the steam and humidity from your shower create a perfect environment for mold to grow. Using an exhaust fan will prevent this from happening.
You should also keep an eye on your walls to look for stains or odd spots that start showing up for no apparent reason. This could indicate that there is a pipe that is leaking. It is much, much easier to fix the problems from a leaking pipe than have to deal with a pipe that has burst. Something else you should check is the caulking around your tub, shower and toilet. If water is allowed to drop through these cracks it is likely to collect on the wood surface underneath. If water is allowed to collect on that surface, it could cause a weakness in the flooring. Once in a while it is a good idea to look at the pipes that are underneath your kitchen and bathroom sinks. This is inconvenient, but it is the only way for you to look at those pipes. If you see anything that looks like they are getting worn and rusty, they should be replaced. Another part of your prevention routine should be to look outside around the foundation of your house. You should be looking for cracks in the foundation, walls and the roof. Even small cracks can be a concern because they will allow water to get inside and the crack will get larger.
If you want to avoid costly bills later on for water damage, the best thing that you can do is spend just a little time looking for problems. It is much easier to correct a small problem than it is to deal with a pipe that has burst and the resulting damage.Stewart Wrighter has recently worked closely with a water damage Los Angeles firm for help with a problem that occurred during a heavy rain last summer.
