Is Liposuction an Answer For Obesity?
It is true that not anyone carrying around excess amounts of fats are good for liposuction. There is a fine line of considerations, risks and complications that separates obese patients from undergoing liposuction.
First let me define obesity; it is a condition where one has too much body fat which stemmed from consuming more calories than you can burn. Other causative factors include genetic make-up and a sedentary lifestyle.
With obesity a myriad of related conditions can also develop which significantly increases the risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis and even cancer. These conditions hinder one from becoming a good candidate for liposuction, and either is liposuction a good treatment for obesity.
Liposuction or liposculpture is a procedure that suctions excess fats from the common problem areas in the body. This includes the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arm, chin, cheek and neck. To reiterate it more clearly, it only suctions fats and not a weight loss solution.
Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity. But for those who are obese and are considering this procedure, it is primarily important to work with a nutritionist in order to arrange healthy diets and exercise to properly regulate caloric levels in the body. Weight should first be stabilized at a relatively good level in order to have better liposuction results.
Liposuction also does not treat the coexisting diseases associated with obesity. The procedure may suction the fatty tissues underneath direct skin surface, but it will not help remove those fats attached on the visceral organs that can cause metabolic diseases (e.g. diabetes) and other obesity-related problems. However with diet and exercise, the fat cells would shrink in size, which can significantly improve metabolic profiles.
In an attempt to treat obesity, large volume liposuction was done, this however resulted to serious surgical complications. It is also not advisable to remove more than 8-10 pounds of fat in a single day because it can cause a metabolic disturbance in the body. In effect due to the large amount of fat removed, it shocks the system creating a sensation of hunger to satiate the body’s need for calories to fix the balance. This will only create a cycle that will never lead you to weight loss or a fit and trimmed body for that matter.
A person needs to be at least 25-30% above his ideal body weight in order to pass for liposuction. Not only is a good diet the answer to this, but it also helps improve the condition of the skin and its elasticity. This will be very important in order for it to contour well with the new body shape.
This information is not to discourage obese individuals from having liposuction. But rather it is to encourage that a better form will be achieved if you lose some weight first through proper diet and regular exercise before undergoing liposuction surgery. Doing so is also a safety precaution to avoid complications.
Therefore, liposuction should only be done once weight and metabolic problems are in check and stable. Remember liposuction or liposculpture is used for those stubborn fats; this is why weight loss or weight stabilization should take precedence. And whatever is not removed through diet and exercise, can be done so by liposuction.
