Menopause Talk: Horse Hormones vs Bio Identical Hormones

For many years, one of the best-selling drugs in the world was Premarin-a commercially available hormone therapy made with estrogens isolated from the urine of pregnant mares.

Women used Premarin to reduce their menopausal symptoms and decrease their risk of cardiovascular disease. A few years ago, however, the Women’s Health Initiative Study (WHI) questioned the ability of Premarin-like hormone therapy to protect against heart attacks and strokes, and warned that women taking the pills had an increased risk of breast cancer. The news left many women confused. Perhaps Premarin wasn\’t the best solution. Meanwhile, what was? After all,

– the symptoms of menopause were still there,
– the cardiovascular risks of menopause were still there,
– the osteoporosis risks of menopause were still there, and
– the breast cancer risks of menopause were still there.

The Key is to Use the Right Kind of Hormones

As we re-examine the facts, we find that the WHI study didn\’t say that using hormones to treat menopausal symptoms and reduce the risk of disease was a bad idea. It did tell us that using Premarin and Provera (a synthetic analogue of progesterone) was not a successful way to do it.

It makes sense. Menopausal symptoms aren\’t caused by a lack of horse estrogens or synthetic progesterones. Introducing these foreign hormones into a woman\’s body may not help, and further, may actually cause additional problems.

Hot flashes, mood swings, and an increased risk of heart attack and osteoporosis do occur, however, during peri-menopause and menopause-just when the female body is going through hormonal changes. That does tell us there\’s a strong hormonal factor involved. Nevertheless, it\’s not horse but human estrogen a woman\’s body needs; not progesterone chemical analogues, but human bio-identical progesterone.

Many studies have shown the advantages experienced by women who supplement with appropriate bio-identical human hormones like estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA. These studies are not well known to the public or mainstream physicians-and they\’re not promoted by most pharmaceutical companies-but they do exist, and they\’ve shown that using supplemental bio-identical human hormones:
– lowers cholesterol levels,
– increases bone density,
– reduces hot flashes and night sweats,
– lessens premenstrual-type symptoms, and
– promotes a feeling of well being.

Physicians using bio-identical hormones in their practices have clinical evidence of the results.

Eating right, exercising, and scheduling regular checkups can go a long way toward helping a woman live a healthy life. From peri-menopause on, however, hormonal balance also becomes a major factor, and finding the right solution can mean the difference between enjoying life and feeling miserable.

If you are interested in trying bio-identical hormones, we encourage you to talk to other women using bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), and check with their practitioners as well. Read the books, articles and studies that have led so many women to make this decision.
