Surin Beach Phuket
Surin beach is one of the more popular beaches on Phuket Island in Thailand. Surin beach is north of Kamala beach. It has an uncluttered appearance apart from some neatly arranged beach chairs and unbrellas. Surin beach has all of the activities you would expect from an up-market beach resort in Thailand including watersports. You can rent out small dingy sailing boats from Surin, and get sailing lessons there. There is a sailing school run by a nice English man and his Thai wife.
Surin Beach boasts all the normal shopping amenities that you find in Thailand. There are many souvenir shops. They also have a golf course, tailors and many cafes and restaurants. There are several beach bars which are right on the beach. They are small and cosy and are a great place to meet other holiday makers and travellers alike. Surin was once a place for backpackers and you could see many backpacker beach huts lining the beaches. However these days the backpackers are grown up, with families and have returned with more money maybe wishing to remember some of their wild parties they enjoyed on the banana-pancake trail while on their gap-years. Phuket still offers excellent value for money, especially in the 3-4 star resorts, however you will not find any beach front accommodation for less than about $40 per night. You can on the other hand find incredible value for money and stay in some fantastic places for around $100 per night. So it pays to spend a bit more to get the best value. As with everything, the cheapest is never the best value.
Surin beach also has a Thai villiage. You can see the buffalo grazing and watch the fishing folk going about their daily lives. This is a great spot for seafood, you can get a nice Thai seafood BBQ for a good price and know full well that the fish you are eating was flapping about in the back of one of the fishing boats a few hours ago. There is a full range of local and international dishes available and you can eat for around 300 Baht ($10) per person easily. There are many hotels ranging from $30-200 per night on Surin beach, so there is something to suit anyone\’s budget.
Surin beach is just a short taxi ride to the famous Patong beach in Phuket. Patong is a very lively tourist town full of large department stores selling all the latest in designer clothing from surf wear through to chic up-market goods. Patong is best known for its nightlife, lady boy cabaret shows and of course the Go-Go bars and strip joints. Surin is a nice place for those who like to indulge a little in the nightlife but relax in more quiet and peaceful surroundings during the day. Surin is therefor a good middle-ground, somewhere to kick back and relax, and still within easy reach of the action at night.
Surin beach has several good bars worth visiting. European visitors usually like to stay away from the karaoke places and chill out at the beach bars and unwind with a cocktail. Hammocks are the in-thing on Surin and you will find many bars with them hanging outside. What better way to relax than in a hammock sipping a Margarita before heading into town for a meal and an evenings entertainment painting the town red.
