The Benefits of Foam Boards

Recent years have seen a rise in the use of foam board insulation materials over other, more traditional building insulation materials. The insulation swap represents the fact that foam core board insulation has been found to carry several unique properties which make it more valuable than other kinds of insulating materials.

They are used to insulate both the inside and outside of roofs and walls, and are meant to reduce the amount of energy flow passing into and out of a home or building. This means that the insulation keeps the cool air in your home during the summer and stops the cold winds from entering it during the winter. Obviously, insulation is something that is found in every building – in fact, we could hardly do without it because our energy costs would soar. Insulation serves to decrease the amount of energy needed to cool or heat a home.

Foam core boards are different from other types of traditional insulation in many respects. For one, they are created through the use of extruded or expanded polystyrene though some are made from other materials, polyurethane derivatives such as polyisocyanurate foam.

The best thing about using this type of insulation over typical materials like mineral wool is that there is little health risk involved. Mineral wool is known to be toxic to humans, and is therefore not a material which should be dealt with regularly. Insulation generally is not seen or heard from by homeowners, but having to deal with it even occasionally may be an undesirable process. Using foam boards eliminates this problem, as they are not toxic and do not require any kind of safety setup before installation. One could say that because it is not toxic, they represent much less risk than do their mineral wool counterparts. Boards feature very low CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) levels, which means that as they work they perform their function in your home they do little to harm the precious ozone layer above. Foam core insulation created using polystyrene or polyisocyanurate can be fit to any space, as they are very easily cut so that they may fit between boards or in the most narrow place in the attic. Because they can be formed to fit any space, they do more to reduce energy transfer in the joints of the home. This is important because joints often suffer the most heat losses; any areas that represent an out-of-reach area for the boards can be covered through the use of insulation spray or insulating tape.

As you can see, this type of insulation is one of the best methods of reducing energy costs in the home. Because insulation eventually needs to be replaced, you should consider using foam to replace any old, toxic materials used when your home was built. This material does not degrade over time, and can therefore be reused if it is still in good shape. Note that foam boards which have been torn apart by installation may not be reused but slight deterioration should pose no threat to the temperature of your home.
