The Ins and Outs of Finding a Great Senior Apartment
You’ve worked hard all your life and now it’s finally time to spend your golden years doing anything you would like. Now is the time to purse your hobbies, interests, take long daily walks and indulge in all of the things you never had time for during your younger years. One of the most pressing concerns for seniors 55 and over is the topic of housing. Some may opt to live in a senior citizen apartment while others may choose assisted living. Let’s take a look at important factors to keep in mind when you are looking for a place to call “Home Sweet Home”.
Most seniors like associating with others in their peer groups. Human beings are social creatures and socializing can improve mental health and actually help with depression. If you don’t have family nearby you may want to live in a community that offers a lot of communal activities and social events. . It’s important for the senior to feel comfortable and at ease with the people they will be living with. One good idea is to meet with residents when you tour the property and ask questions and see how well you mesh with them. A few select places may even offer fitness classes, outdoors activities and organize parties.
Always tour numerous properties before making a final decision. Take your time to inspect the grounds and take a look at the buildings and units you are considering.
An elevator may be very convenient if you have difficulty climbing stairs. Do they have amenities such as a pool, an exercise room, hated parking, a laundry room and a garage? Does management organize events for the residents? If there are stairs, the should be easy to maneuver and come with a rail for safety reasons. Find out if the senior apartment includes appliances; some are fully equipped with microwaves and ovens.
Think about what you like to do for fun. If you like to take walks and enjoy the outdoors you will want to find a property that is located close to a park or better yet equipped with walking trails. Or do you prefer staying indoors watching television? Find a property that is in tune with what you like to do.
One of the most important aspects is location.. A few select seniors may still opt to drive but many will be unable to do so and may want to live close to local bus stops. If you can’t drive then you want to pick a complex that is within walking distance to local stores. Safety can be a concern; make sure that the apartment is gated and has a security system. Find out if the grounds are patrolled at night. Google the area and find out the crime level for the surrounding area.
Prices vary; some communities are very affordable while others may be very upscale and pricier. Think about you are willing to spend realistically. You want to get the best features and amenities possible while still staying within your set budget. One option is subsidized housing but there is usually a long waiting list. One good thing about senior citizen apartments is that they are usually much cheaper than regular apartments.
Good luck on your search and enjoy your golden years!
