Treating Termite Problems With Orange Oil
Termites are widely known to cause significant problems for homeowners. However, many people do not have an accurate view of what can be done about a Northern Kentucky termite invasion. The thing that you see in the movies and on television is that if you have termites invade your house, it is only a matter of time before they can completely destroy it. Although this can be the case, if the infestation is left untreated; many times a termite expert can stop any further damage from being done.
One of the newer methods that are popular in treating termite invasions is something called orange oil. The product was first developed in the 1930’s. The basis for the product is that arsenic was put into active termite colonies. They discovered that some of the termites were killed directly from the initial application of the product. Those that were able to live through this first wave of attack were eventually killed due to the toxic residue of the product. Orange oil was developed based upon this research.
As you may have already guessed, orange oil comes from oranges. It is an extract from the peel of the orange. This is not to be confused with orange juice as this product would cause you severe distress if you were to drink it. Many people have had worse reactions due to irritation in their eyes and their skin. The extract from the orange is combined with a chemical called D-Limonene, which is an effective insecticide. This substance has been known to combat against flies, ants, mites, mosquitoes and crickets. The product works because the produce dissolves the exoskeleton of the termite which eventually leads to the death of the bug due to severe water and protein loss. The orange oil also makes them want to stop eating. Because of this, some of the termites will also die simply from starvation. This product is most effective on drywood termites. Once the infestation has been identified, the treatment consists of drilling holes into the wood. This allows the orange oil to fill the spaces. You can see results as soon as three days, but the completed treatment may not happen for three weeks.
After the treatment, you should carefully inspect the area that has been infected for signs that some of the termites managed to survive. If you see that the termites have come back, you should call a professional immediately. Orange oil has been shown to be the least toxic method that is available to handle a termite problem. However it the problem is at an advanced state, you should not try to use this treatment (or any others) on your own.
If termites are not treated effectively, they can cause a significant amount of damage to your home. Most people recommend contacting professional exterminators at the first sign of termites. If you do this, you would not have to worry about whether or not the treatment will work, you know it will be effective in preventing further damage to your home.
