What Does \’Grandparent\’ Mean to You?

Grandparents day is celebrated across the globe by many of us and many of these days are approaching. For Americans, Grandparents day is celebrated on the 11th of September and for the UK on the 2nd of October and is a great day to show the Grandparents in your life that you appreciate them. Grandparents come in many shapes and sizes in modern life. Some people don\’t have any left, but for the rest of us, we\’re lucky enough to receive the ongoing support and love from them.

This holiday has made me think about the role a Grandparent plays in today’s world. I remember my Grandparents and what they did for me but things were different back then and life has changed significantly since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. After doing a little bit of research I have found that though the essence of a Grandparent is the same, quite a large amount about Grandparents has changed…

According to Wikipedia, around 30,000 years ago people started to live longer and a consequence was that people began to have Grandparents. Way back then the knowledge and experience of a grandparent was invaluable and could be the difference between life and death. Grandparents would have learned from their own experiences where to go to get water in a drought, what food to eat etc. and would pass this onto their children and grandchildren.

Thousands of years later, Grandparents are still passing on their knowledge and experience but in todays tough financial climate, it seems they are also taking over some parenting responsibilities. According to The Grandparents Association, new research from Aviva suggests that over half of all UK grandparents look after their grandchildren and help around the house while mums and dads work and 99.5% do it for free.

These Grandparents are not only teaching and helping their grandchildren to learn and develop, but they are also providing huge financial support by offering free or very cheap childcare as well as:
– Helping out financially with occasional household bills (15% of those asked said that they do)
– Regularly doing the school run (28%)
– Cooking occasional meals for the family (26%)
– Helping grandchildren with their hobbies (33%)
– Assisting with gardening (13%)

It seems to me that Grandparents are becoming more and more vital in our modern society and I for one feel that they need to know how brilliant, invaluable and helpful they are to us all and strongly advocate a day to celebrate them. We should all be doing something for the Grandparents in our lives, whether they are genetic, adopted or step-grandparents they all need to know how cared for they are. This year, I will be sending my special message to them by sending them all a Grandparents day e card but I will also celebrate with them with a meal and spending quality time with them.

Times are changing so much and with the advances in technology etc. I feel it is important to have influences from a time when mail was Royal, the \’wireless\’ was the word we used for the radio and the most mobile a phone got was when you walked to the pay phone. I want my children to grow up knowing what it was all about \’back in the day\’. I do think its important that our children’s voices are heard, but I value the voice of older generations as much and love to hear their opinions on today\’s crazy world.

So where ever you are out there, please spare a little time for the Grandparents out there who are actively helping our society to run smoothly whilst teaching us new lessons on the way.Katie Davies is a British artist who started creating her own artistic e cards for over 4 years.
