What Is Kona Coffee?
Kona Coffee is considered a world class gourmet coffee worldwide. For people who are not aware, Kona coffee is more or less Hawaiian coffee. Over the years Kona coffee has grown to become one of the most expensive types of coffee you can buy.
Samuel Ruggles brought the first coffee plant to the state of Hawaii in 1928. He took his coffee cuttings from Brazil and after he planted these, it took some years before they could actually take root in the mainland, and soon after became a popular crop in Kona.
After the coffee market crash in 1899, some large coffee plantations began developing to the extent that coffee soon became one of the major income earning plants. Coffee trees started blooming in February or March, and green berry trees were already forming by April.
There are different classifications in which Kona coffee can be placed. There is the first type that has only two beans, flat on one side and oval on the other side on each cherry. The second type usually has only one round bean on each cherry which are also known as Peaberry. Apart from this, Kona coffee can be further classified by gradein to Kona Number 1, Kona prime, Kona fancy, Kona Extra fancy, Kona Select, and all of the Type I beans. Kona coffee grades of Type II are the Peaberry Prime and Peaberry Number 1.
The Kona district’s tropical weather includes sunny mornings with gentle clouds and rain in the afternoon. Combine this with the rich, hard packed, volcanic soil and you have perfect conditions for growing some of the world’s greatest coffee.
Kona coffee is in short supply for world demand, so the prices tend to be high. One pound of whole coffee beans typically goes for $25-$35 per pound. However, it is so exceptionally tasty that it\’s worth every penny.
When traveling to Hawaii, be sure to stop in to one the many small farms that sell this fabulous coffee. As you travel across the islands countryside you will find family run farms with the mother, father and children all working on the harvesting and processing of the coffee beans. This is one of the reasons the coffee is so good. Not being a big business allows for the quality to come through.
What does it taste like? If you’re lucky enough to sample some Kona coffee you will find it to be creamy, smooth, and sweet. It is medium bodied with a very balanced, but not sharp taste. It has a hint of chocolate without being too overdone. This is only if you get the real 100% Kona coffee, not a Kona blend.
Because of its rarity and price, some stores sell \”Kona Blends\”. These are not a mixture of different Kona coffees – they are a blend of Kona and Brazilian or Columbian coffees. They only contain 10% Kona coffee and 90% inferior blends.
