So, you finally decided to move into the big time, and start a free forum. This is a very intelligent move on your part, and if you are willing to work at it, the site could turn into a mega money maker for you. For your sake, let\’s hope so. A key factor to the success or failure of any forum; is having really good moderators, who sincerely care about the site.

A moderator\’s job can and does vary greatly depend on many factors. Some free forums do not like having arguments between members taking place, because they feel like their site is above that. Whereas other forums love these types of heated debates, because they know people really enjoy reading other people insulting each other, and they will keep coming back to read the future comments that are written.

This is just one example of a moderator\’s role that could be very different between two extremely successful forums. There are many more, however, there are also many other things that a good moderator will do that are similar to all forums.

First, they will keep the discussions based on the subject matter that the forum is based on. Second, they will move threads around the forum to the most appropriate location. Third, and one of the most important, is they will keep out the spammers. Nothing can ruin a forum quicker, than a bunch of silly people using it as some type of free advertising space to promote something they are selling.

Now that you have at least a partial understanding of what a knowledgeable moderator does, you must be wondering, do I have to pay them, and where do I get them? Most moderators are not paid, but when you first start your forum until it gets popular, you could certainly have to hire people to do the job. After all, forums operate 24 hours a day and you cannot keep an eye on it all day, and all night.

The vast majority of the moderators today are simply people that really love the site, and are there reading or commenting all of the time. After a forum gets popular, the owner will start to notice certain people really enjoy coming to it, and these are the people that you will approach about becoming a moderator.

Since they already truly appreciate the site, in most instances they will take their job very seriously, and do excellent work for you taking care of it. You do not have to pay them, but it is nice to provide them some kind of bonus every now and then, like a free gift card for a restaurant meal once a month, or something along those lines.

Certain forums on the internet today bring in $100,000\’s each month in profits for their owners. However, there are other ones that only make a small profit; or no money at all for that matter when they first begin. Please be sure to remember that there never has been a forum that eventually turned into a huge economic success story without having at team of highly dedicated and very loyal moderators working for it.
