A New Cornerstone: The Concrete Form
Form-work is a termed applied to molds, either temporary or permanent, into which materials such as concrete is put. A variation of this is the concrete form, which is a system of these molds which is designed to stay in place. It is a permanent type of form-work which is designed to create more energy efficient homes by creating permanent insulation.
This type of building application is used in walls, floors and roofs which are made from reinforced concrete. They create a more structural form for the floor or the walls of any building. They are usually set in modular-style units, and then dry-stacked. After this, concrete is poured into them.
Such forms are generally shortened down to the term ICFs, or Insulated Concrete Forms. ICFs are usually manufactured from certain materials such as polystyrene and polyurethane foam. They can also be manufactured from both cement-bonded wood fiber and cement-bonded polystyrene beads.
The molds usually have a large cavity into which the cement is poured, and reinforced steel is also added. By adding reinforced steel to the ICFs, this way a type of support known as flexural strength is added.
Even after the cement itself has dried and hardened (or \’cures\’), the forms themselves remain in place permanently. They help to provide insulation to the building, both acoustic and thermal, and will also leave enough space to run other vitals to the building like plumbing and electrical wires.
In the use of cement forms within the building industry, there are a wide range of advantages to be availed of. The most obvious, with regards to the thermal and acoustic insulation that they provide, is the comfort of the building itself. Aside from this, the structure will also be a lot more energy efficient. The resulting insulation of the building will also allow for minimal air leaks and heat loss. All of these factor in to improve the overall comfort of the house.
Other advantages also include an inherent structural integrity of the building itself. It will stand stronger against the forces of nature such as high speed winds and storms. With regards to training and development from the manufacturing side, the actual building styles of cement forms is quite easy to learn. This generally saves the builders a lot of time, money and effort so they can get straight to work on a new building project.
Naturally there are also disadvantages to be had. Cement cutting tools would be required if the owner wished to alter the building somewhat, for example the addition of a new door or window. If polystyrene is used in the forms themselves, then the possibility of damp groundwater and insect infestations will be heightened. An easy way to overcome this disadvantage, which many builders often utilize, is to use polystyrene that has been treated with insecticides and promote methods of making waterproof versions of concrete forms. Overall there is a lot to be said for the use of these kinds of molds. In general, even the disadvantages can be overcome with a few foresighted ideas.
