Activities Around Ft. Lee VA in Autumn

October is always an exciting time of year in the southeast: the cool air and changing leaves are refreshing, and remind us of all life’s possibilities. The ground, parched from the hot summer months, is finally quenched, thanks to the many moody rainstorms. Our tastes begin to shift as the harvest season approaches, and suddenly the idea of spending a day seasoning and stirring a rich stew sounds like a wonderful thing.

If you live in or around Ft. Lee, then you may already know: October means golf. With tournaments taking place throughout the month, it can be tough to choose. There are scramble golf tournaments if speed is your game-the day-night scramble features glow-in-the-dark golf balls for an added challenge. If you prefer a more traditional game, the Cardinal Club hosts its annual Golf Championship in early October.

If a culinary adventure is more your speed, visit the Yearly Greek Festival at St. Elpis Greek Orthodox Church in Hopewell. There you can enjoy traditional Greek cuisine, sweets, wine and beer, music and dancing, and lots of family fun and shopping. Or you might like to take in the Festival of Grapes and Hops in Old Towne Petersburg. Located close to the Farmers Market, the festival features Virginia wines, beers, cheeses, and crafts. The Cardinal Golf Club also hosts beer and wine events this time of year. For a romantic evening, attend the Berkley Plantation’s Autumn Sunset and Spirits Tour in Charles City. There you will take a guided historical tour of the grounds of this picturesque plantation home while enjoying Virginia wine and light fare. Still thirsty? Don’t miss Oktoberfest at the Post Field House. Indulge in German food and beer, and bring the kids. There’s a Chicken Dance contest and an inflatable play area.

There’s more fun for kids at the Kid’s Fall Festival at the Post Field House. Kick off Halloween weekend with pumpkin carving, costume contests, and a haunted house, and children’s theater. If you’re in Colonial Heights, attend the Ghosts of Violet Banks Past at the Violet Banks Museum for family fun, frights, and food. Or participate in the Frisbee Golf competition at White Bank Park.

If Hopewell is your home, stay fit this fall with the City Point 5K and River Run. Bring the whole family (or your company). The race’s proximity to Halloween means nice, cool weather, and a costume contest for the best-dressed runner. There’s also a fun run for kids and an awards ceremony following the race. Take the little ones to the Hopewell Parks and Recreation Monster Mash as a fun supplement to your trick-or-treating plans. There will be a puppet show and lots of refreshments.

If history is your bag, don’t miss Pamplin Historical Park’s symposium on Civil War history in Petersburg. Speakers will cover several topics of particular interest to the region. Or attend Pamplin Park’s Rally Camps where you can experience the life of a soldier during the Civil War. These cool weather events should get you primed to explore more of what awaits you in beautiful Virginia.
