Bathroom Upgrades and Repairs – DIY Projects Add Value to Your Home

Are you struggling with decisions about whether to start that project that will make your house the home of your dreams? Does it involve an upgrade to your bathroom? If it involves replacing vanities, sinks, tubs, or shower doors, there is good news for you. These kinds of repairs and upgrades can do nothing but increase the value of your home. In today’s economy, this is good to know. One thing you may not want to do; though is install certain kinds of custom mirrors. And, unless you have plans to stay in your home forever, do not install glass with the family name and crest on it. This is not a wise investor’s strategy.

Remodeling or improving your bathroom is one way to improve the overall value of your house, and, in addition, it gives you a good feeling to have new plumbing and fixtures in the one room that has a tendency to become musty and moldy. Your bathroom should be clean and fresh, especially since it is the place you generally start off your day. Getting out of bed and stumbling into a drab, mildewed bathroom can be depressing, and this is not how you want to feel first thing in the morning.

You may be thinking that bathroom repairs are too expensive, and for some upgrades or repairs, you are correct. Those that involve a plumber will definitely cost more than the ones that you can do yourself. This is where a well-planned weekend DIY project is appropriate. If you are handy with basic carpenter skills, you probably have what it takes to enhance the look and feel of the “thrown room,” but if you do not know which end of the hammer to hold, you might want to enlist the help of a crafty friend or brother-in-law.

The first step is to count the cost and make an organized list of the steps in your project, including a supply list. Having a detailed supply list will do two things for you. First, it will give you a pretty close idea of the overall cost. This is always good to know before you get into something and find out you cannot afford to finish. The second thing it will do is it will keep your trips to the supply store to a minimum. There is no doubt that no matter how much planning you do, there will be more trips than you thought, but with a good list, you can cut down on the number of times you have to stop to go get a needed part or piece of trim.

Depending on the job you are going to take on, it is good to know exactly how much you will save by doing it yourself. A good rule of thumb is that the supplies for a major do-it-yourself project will run a contractor 30-50% of the total job cost. Of course, the smaller the job, the higher the percentage of labor will cost. So, if saving 50-70% interests you, go for it.
