Breast Implants: The Different Placement

Aside from actually deciding on getting breast implants, there are also other factors that you have to decide on as well. Your surgeon will walk you through the different types, sizes and placement. Let us focus on the last one, and how it affects the overall result of this cosmetic surgery procedure to your physique.

There are two kinds of breast implant placement, and these are the subglandular placement, and submuscular/subpectoral placement. The submuscular placement also has two variations which are the partial submuscular placement and complete submuscular placement. These however will be decided by cosmetic surgeon based on how it will fit your general form as well as your expected outcome.

Subglandular Placement

This type of placement is also called “overs” because it is placed over the muscle and fibrous tissue that line your chest wall. But it is behind the glandular muscles of your breast. This type of placement creates more cleavage because the implants are placed closely with each other.

If you have less body fats and less breast tissue, this type of placement can make your implants more noticeable. This is why for this case it is best to use gel implants to create a more natural-looking outcome. But generally a subglandular placement creates natural movement as you move.

This type of placement is also considered to be less painful and has faster healing because there is no trauma done to your muscles. It is also a good way to correct conditions such as mildly sagging breasts.

Submuscular/Subpectoral Placement

As its name denotes this type of placement is done by placing the implants below the muscular tissues of your chest, which is why it is called “unders.” The two variations which are full submuscular and the partial submusclar placement create certain types of projections which will fit a certain form best.

A full submuscular placement is done by placing the implants beneath the breast tissue and the major muscle groups of the chest ( pectoralis major, pectoralis minor and serratus muscle). It is less palpable and it reduces the risk of developing capsular contractures. It also makes the mammographic imaging of your breast a lot easier.

In a partial submuscular placement the implants are placed beneath the pectoral muscles and some portion below the breast tissue. By incising the pectoralis major muscle, the upper portion of the implant is placed underneath, and the other half is placed subglandularly.

This kind of placement requires longer recovery time due to the extent of trauma done, from your glandular tissues to your muscles. It is also expected to be more painful. However it creates a more natural contour, specifically for those who have less breast tissue.

But all these will be decided after an extensive consultation is done by a certified cosmetic surgeon prior to your breast augmentation surgery. Since you now have some knowledge on the various placement you can better decide and confer with your surgeon on whether “overs” or “unders” are fit for you.
